Topic: Hypnotherapy Posted: 16 September 2008 at 7:05pm |
Hey guys,
I have a chronic nail biting habit that I've had all my life and I've finally decided enough is enough. So I've been looking into hypnotherapy to treat it.
Has anyone had any experience with using hypnotherapy/hypnosis to combat bad habits? Any recommendations of therapists in Auckland?
Cheers

Yep! Dh and I did it to quit smoking and we've been 3 months ciggy free. Havent touched a single smoke! I recommend it but I guess it depends on how good the hypnosis Dr is.
Good luck hun, well worth the investment.

I'm back from my appointment!
This was just a trial session, next appointment we will actually do some work.
It was a very strange feeling, to relax she got me "walking down stairs" and "riding down in a lift". At first I didn't think it was working as I was still very aware of everything, then when she told me I wouldn't be able to open my eyes when I tried and she was right that was weird, in a good way!
She said that hypnosis can be used for absolutely anything as it is just giving your sub-conscious mind a new idea to replace the old one.
For me it's to not stress about TTC and to stop beating myself up over Caitlin's birth.
I'm seeing Amanda Collier through Mother-Well in Mt Eden. Very nice lady and didn't mind at all when I burst into tears telling her about my birth experience She gave me a cd as well so that I can practice self-hypnosis until our next appointment

I saw a hypnotherapist in 2006 to help me deal with a phobia I had developed. I went to this
place & found Robyn really good (& she is really close to you).
My appt sounds similar to Toni's. I was somewhat skeptical before I went along but I was really surprised at how good it was. I would definitely continue going on a more regular basis if we could afford it.

I was hypnotised to stop sucking my thumb when I was 11 - it worked brilliantly - I stopped the habit immediately after the appt and never sucked it ever again.

That's awesome guys thanks!
Sally I've seen her sign on her gate for hypnobirthing when I've been out walking. I never really thought about the fact she'd do other things - that's a great suggestion.
So did you guys need referrals or can you just do walk ins?
Toni it sounds like it went really well. It's probably really good you could open up enough to cry.
Edit: Ok I've sent off an inquiry to the one Sally recommended. Sally do I take it that the treatment needs to be ongoing? Not sure I could afford more than a few sessions.

I'm not sure how many sessions you'd need Bobbie but I think some people only need 1 for their habit to be "cured". I do remember her saying she'd helped lots of people who had all sorts of things they were either addicted to or scared of etc.
You'll have to let us know how it goes.

As most of my friends on here will confirm, it doesn't take much to set off my waterworks lol.
As for the amount of sessions, I was told 2-3 and I'll be able to do it myself when I needed to

Glad to hear it went so well Toni, I'd love to know what the actual experience is like one day.

Dh and I only had 1 session each to quit smoking. The hypnosis Dr we saw said that there was no need for us to go back unless we felt we needed extra sessions. Each person is different and I guess it also depends on your confidence too
