its that sugar substitute - remember that lady who got sick from too much chewing gum, thats the stuff.

i googled it and got this:

There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption. It seems surreal, but true. How can one chemical create such chaos? Aspartame dissolves into solution and can therefore travel throughout the body and deposit within any tissue. The body digests aspartame unlike saccharin, which does not break down within humans.

and this from another site:

Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods. Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr John W. Olney and Consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 as well as investigations of G.D. Searle's research practices caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

i will copy the original email from sue kedgley here too - it says it better than i could.

Green Party MP Sue Kedgley says she is very concerned to discover that 81 medicines which may be used by children and young people contain the controversial additive aspartame, which has been linked to a range of adverse reactions.

“This is arguably the most controversial additive in the food supply. Why would such an additive be permitted to be used in medicines, which are supposed to make children get better, especially when there are less controversial sweeteners available?”

In response to a written question, the Minister of Health has confirmed Medsafe has approved 124 medicines containing aspartame, including 81 with dosage instructions for children or young people.

“It worries me that many parents may not be aware that some prescribed and over the counter medicines they may be giving to their children may contain an additive that is linked with adverse reactions,” Ms Kedgley says.

“It is very important that parents do not stop their children from taking necessary medications, however, if they are concerned, they should ask their doctor or pharmacist if there is an equivalent medicine that does not contain aspartame,” Ms Kedgley says.

The Green Party is calling on Medsafe to source medicines for children which do not contain the artificial sweetener aspartame following revelations that 81 medicines which may be used by children and young people contain the controversial additive.

Ms Kedgley is also calling on Medsafe to put pressure on pharmaceutical companies to reformulate their products, and in the meantime ensure medicines containing aspartame are clearly labelled with a warning so parents are aware of its presence and potential for side effects.

“An adverse reaction linked to aspartame may actually be misdiagnosed as being a symptom of another illness resulting in the child being prescribed further unnecessary medications.”

Another concern is that aspartame is not always clearly identified on many labels, Ms Kedgley says.

“There should be a requirement that the word ‘aspartame’ appear prominently on the label, along with a warning statement that it has been linked to a range of adverse reactions.”

That's frightening GandT, I wouldn't recommend aspartame for children at all. Its an artifical sweetner and the effects of having it in your diet long term - ie from childhood are unknown.

There have been some links between artifical sweetners and alzhheimers.

I drink about 2-3 glasses of coke zero a day, have equal for all my coffees, have diet anything and everything i can and have heaps of chewing gum so chances are im overdosing on the stuff. COuld explain a lot really but doesnt it suck that anything diet is probably worse for you than the real thing.
When i was pregnant and avoidign the diet stuff my diabetes nurses were telling me its ok to have diet stuff when pregnant and that there was no risk to my baby, Im glad i didnt listen!

Thanks for that!

Revolting stuff- I avoid it like the plague! Never knew about the phenergan- it just seems so pointless to have it in there. I'm pretty sure Sprite has it in both its fatty and diet as well. If you check almost all fizz has it- the only one that I think didn't was bundaberg ginger beer and 7up. Over here they have diet, caffiene free aspartame free cola- it tastes pretty poxy but better than poisoning ourselves!

I wonder how much is too much. Of that list i would have at least 12 of those symptoms on a regular basis. I wonder how much would be due to all the aspartame i have each day or if the amount i consume isnt actually a lot compared to others.

Aspartame is not carcinogenic in small doses. Your intestines can break down a fair bit of it quite normally and put it out with waste I think it is about 40mg per kg of body weight (EDIT: as measured for a 70kg person) or something to that effect.
I think if you are dosing your kids constantly on this stuff then it is going to give you problems but like everything else that is bad for you, should be taken in moderation.
I would hope this would also go for things like metamucil and phenergan!
