Topic: Different advice Posted: 01 August 2006 at 1:59pm |
I realised the other day that us mums with a little experience will give differing and often conflicting advice about how we handled different situations.
I just want to say to all you new mums that I (and I'm sure the other ladies too ) will not be offended if you decide that what we suggest isn't appropriate for your particular situation! We all enjoy sharing our experiences and we don't expect everyone to do things "our way or else!"
Every child is different... the only piece of advice I expect all mums to listen to is: Trust your own instincts!
(Hope you other mums don't mind me speaking for you like this )

Thanks becca, I get a lot of people telling me what to do and this is one place where I don't feel like people are trying to demand people follow their advice.
I like the fact that we get different ideas and options, if one suggestion doesn't work there are others to try. Its so reassuring to come on to this forum and see that other people are going through / have gone through the exact same thing. Its great the experienced Mums have suggested different things to try.

I agree fully with what Becca said too! It is so hard being a mum and getting told all the different things, just go with what your gut tells you!

i think its good we have all had success with diff things, cause after all babies are very different and nothing works the same for all kids and mums.
hope that sounded right - had to go to the kitchen to stop the kids doing whatever they shouldnt have been doing. (reason for edit)

what do you mean Becca? I'm ALWAYS right!!!!
Nah, just kidding. I think it's great to realise that everyone is different and that advice is just that...advice, not what you MUST do. Good thing to remember that when encoutering plunket, doctors and family, as they can be really pushy. But, WE know...well, eventually kinda know, what's best for our little ones....kinda.

As a first time mum, it's been absolutely information overload from people in all directions (especially hospital midwives - all with contradicting advice) but somehow you manage to weed out all the stuff you feel in your own mind is just rubbish and from the rest, take what you think will work and store it away in your (nappy) brain.
That said, it's brilliant having a variety of things to refer to because as said above, what may work for someone might not work for the next person or even work the next day!
And also, it really really helps to have a forum that is full of non-judgemental, experienced people to get advice from

I agree with Becca...all we offer is advice (and I take so many from you lovely helpful ladies....). We share of experiences and if they help you solve your problem then we are glad.....
When I first had my bub my MIL was shuving information (30year old I mught add) down my throat and I just hated it, I came on here and had loads of ideas and used the one that suited me...or I went with my gut feeling.
So yah read, decide and go with Gut feeling!

I so agree. I was at the Parent and Child show in Welly 2 years ago when Andrew was about 5 months old. He was in his pram and crying - tired he jsut needed to go to sleep. An older lady (I'd say in her 50's) told me that he needed a dummy to shut him up as he should be crying like that in public. Thanks but no thanks lady. also my MIL tried the well this is how it worked for me thing and I just ingored it and she soon got the hints that I didn't care what she did with her psycho (her eldest is a nutcase - head issues big time) son as it was over 30 years ago.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!
