Topic: More noisy neighbours! Posted: 08 November 2009 at 10:14pm |
We also have noisy neighbours but they aren't residents! Our house backs onto a park where there is a hall. Every Sunday there is either church or singing rehearsals (I think church) and between 11am & 2pm they sing at the top of their voices. It is seriously loud.
Every single window and door is open in the hall when it it is warm and because it is a very quiet neighbourhood the singing sounds like it is in our house (even with our windows closed).
We have lived here for years and have always just put up with it, but I was in baby's room today and it was soo loud! What if baby sleeps between these times - do you find your babies sleep through noise like this or will we have to work around it? I'm guessing from reading someone else's post just now, that because it isn't between 10pm & 5am there isn't anything we can do?

This would be terrible and it is a hard situation. Remember there are also decibel limits on noise, and there are limits on EXCESSIVE noise. If I were you I'd call the citizens advice bureaux, they help with all that kind of thing and they are really nice, I've used them a few times. They are voluntary so they really care about what they do.
If you haven't called before have a look at their website. http://www.cab.org.nz/
good luck!!

Chances are the baby will get used to it pretty quickly. It actually works in your favour if you can get the baby used to noises while it sleeps - then you can get on and do vacuuming etc.

Yeah your baby will most likely sleep through it to be honest. We go to church and when Miss M was born she would sleep straight through church worship with drums and the works!

If you've been living there during your pregnancy, baby will be used to the noise already. I have a very loud boof head dog, and my daughter has never woken to him, even when he goes nuts.

mmm...my family would have fun with this.
i would have my son set his speaker towards the place and play very loud death metal at the appropriate time
i'm sure you will have someone come round to negotiate in no time....

LOL Aquarius!
Sorry I haven't got much advice. Ringing the CAB would be a good start anyway. Baby will probally sleep through it, but I understand how annoying it would be for you. At our old house every week some band would play on the footpath (and I mean band! Trumpets, drums and bagpipes!!) about 4 metres from our house for about 3 hours.

If it gets too much, maybe it's worth popping round and mentioning it to them? You'd assume, being a church and all, that they wouldn't want to annoy people! They'd probably rather chat to you first than hav you call noise control. (Although, to be fair, there's probably only a limited amount the can change, but they might be able to keep it down a bit).
Although do it nicely - one grump old codger came round and ranted at us when the kids from church were playing with a ball round the back, and felt like telling him to come back and ask again nicely

Thanks for all the advice LOL Aquarius!
It is not actually a church - but it is a community hall where they gather for what we think are church acitivities? They must rent it out. And it is not even nice harmonious singing - they are all pretty terrible!!
We could try talking to them hopes I do agree it would be better than calling someone on them, but as they can't shut the windows (must be pretty warm in there in summer) there probably isn't alot they can do to help - apart from not sing altogether! Which isn't fair on them either I guess!
They must have been doing rehearsals last December for something as they starting singing at 5am for a week - we had to call noise control this time though as it was just ridiculous!
It would be awesome if they could install air con and shut all the windows but being a hall, I think we are dreaming!
Will see what advice CAB can give us.

5am!! You couldn't get me up to sing that early! And if you did it wouldn't be worth listening too (not that it is any other time!).

I would definitely try talking to them. maybe they can close some of the windows that are closer to you which might help a bit???? Behind us is an indoor skating ring and every thrus night during summer they leave all the doors wide open (again no air con) and it can be quite loud.......I managed to get the email address of the manager and sent an email explaning about the noise, and they agreed to shut the door closest to us and then keep the other open and that really helped.
Also if you are concerned about the baby sleeping during that time you could always try playing white noise (or turning on a fan) to help block out the singing noise (we sometimes turn on the fan when DH is banging away on some project while Ella is sleeping and she sleeps through the noise).
