Topic: Constipation :-S Posted: 21 June 2007 at 6:40pm |
Hey ladies. Just wondering if anyone has ideas to relieve constipation in babies. My poor boy has been struggling all day to do his No 2s. I think he's got most of it out, thank goodness, cause I hate the distress it's been causing him. At the mo I'm just helping him by moving his legs around, and rubbing his tummy. Just wondering if anyone has any remedies.

Hi. We have the same problem here. I boil up prunes with pears and give that to Elle with her cereal in the morning. It seems to help :)

I didn't think of boiling prunes!. I've just given him some diluted kiwifruit juice, and he had a couple teaspoons of kiwifruit today (as thats what they use as a gentle laxative with elderly people, which is what I think got him on his way. He's down for the night so hopefully his little drink will help soften them up over night. Thanks for your advice

Sometimes water can help, do you give him water to drink? The Plunket nurse mentioned it the other day for my Kryssi, who is 5mos.

My stepmum used the brown sugar and boiled water trick with Sam last week as he was terribly constipated. It put a road right through him! She is a nurse also, so I trusted her implicitly.

I dont usually give him water as he's breastfeed. I did have some boiled water mixed with the kiwifruit juice. Haven't had any movement so far today. Will try the brown sugar and water trick too. Thanks ladies

Connor and Andrew get stewed fruit (with cereal) in the mornings for breakfast and I try to include a couple of kiwifruit or plums in the fruit mix. Beetroot is another good one for clearing the insides out. I also try and make sure they have loads of water, be it in a watery vege mix at food time or by extra drinks during the day. If it's really bad, there's always lactulose (available at your pharmacy or via prescription - it's free under prescription)

Also - a warm bath can help - apparently it relaxes them.

I'm glad I'm not the only one out there lolz.I gave him a bath yesterday when he was really having trouble pooping, and it helped a wee bit.
I gave him a mixture of pear, kiwifruit, a teaspoon of brown sugar, and some boiled water all mixed together....and a couple minutes later he was on his way!!. I think it's all cleared out now as they're a lot softer, almost back to their usual consistency. I think the brown sugar really did the trick.

Glad it worked for ya, Eva. If he gets constipated again (thanks to Ella's prob I have a ton of experience with this issue! ), as a rule of thumb, prune juice is gentler on the system than Kiwi, the juice of either fruit is best but if they don't help it's time to move on to the puree'd prunes (cook em up slowly first to fatten them up), then pureed kiwi (raw - choose gold kiwi not green as it's less likely to cause reactions). Avoid banana, and give extra water - in a syringe if need be! Keep up the good work with massage, and remember to rub his tummy in the direction that his lower bowel works in (hand to the left-hand side - your left as you face him, that is, of his belly button, over the top of it, and down the other side), and exercising his legs. And if need be, there's always Coloxyl or Lactulose from the chemist - Lactulose is made from fruit sugars so works in a similar way to the brown sugar. If it gets seriously bad, a Doc can prescribe an enema that is much easier and simpler to use than it sounds!
And BTW - my plunket lady recommended the brown sugar as being worth a try too.

Ooohhhh.... and here's what one of the Paed's Ella saw told us - she's found that breastfeeding mothers who drink a lot of coke or eat a fair bit of chocolate tend to get runnier stools from their babies!!! I can't bring myself to try the coke but the choc I'm doing my bit with. Am yet to see results but hey, was worth a shot, right?! He he.

...I'll say, Jess!
Sunraysia prune juice is the stuff you're thinking of. freezing it in icecubes helps 'cause that's a heck of a lot of yukky yukky juice to get through before it goes off, and it goes off in about a week or so.

Or if you have prunes and your baby isn't on solids you can boil some prunes and give the water to your baby.
Plunket told me that 5ml of 100% apple or orange juice in 50ml of water would be ok (actually the nurse said everyday but I don't think so!)

Hi. I took Andy to a homeopath when he was really constipated. Worked really well.
