Ok so my DH is the Storeroom Manager at a supermarket, the guy who works under him is 20 years older
Yesterday Dh left a small list of things for this guy to do before he went home for the night, nothing major!
Well, he went and complained about it to one of the store managers! and to some other staff memebers as well!! Made a HUGE deal out of nothing!

Today they had to have a meeting about it, and DH got told he cant tell this guy what to do cos he is older than DH.( in 2 of the other departments the managers have people under them that are older and they dont get told off for such things!), never mind that DH is the manager and has been since b4 this a hole started!!

Dh is so angry, and they wouldnt listen to anything he said, this guy is lazy and a real ****** and DH gets no respect and crap pay, yet he does a great job in the storeroom! He comes home exhausted from working so hard.

Im so pissed off and feel bad for my DH, surely they are not allowed to say that to him, that he cant tell the older guy what to do...that doesnt seem right to me!
He was also told by his boss a few months back, that they didnt want to give him the manager job cos they "knew" he would get a big head- WTF! grrr He has never bossed anyone around, he just goes to work gets the job done and comes home!

Sounds like a bit of the "old boys" network ganging up on your man.. which isn't on.

When they had the meeting did your DH have anyone with him? I'm just wondering if they are going to class this as a verbal warning or just a friendly chat....I'd check that out.

Is there someone else your DH can approach about this? Seems to me that the other guy is just being a big baby and doesn't like the fact that DH is doing such a great job.. so there's bound to be some jealousy there.

I guess the only other thing DH can do, is just go to work do his job and leave, and not doing anything over and above what he does already...see if anyone notices???

Poor guy...

My boss is 10 years younger than me and he certainly gives me stuff to do, he's the boss. Age has nothing to do with it.

I think some people have real trouble dealing with their managers being younger than them, sounds like this guys is one of them

Could your DH approach the union for some help or advice about this?

I agree that some people have trouble dealing with a manager who is younger than them but it's about respect for authority regardless of age.

My manager is younger than me and gives me plenty of work to do! There's no sense complaining about it - just get in and do it.

Sounds like his manager doesn't respect him though either which makes things tougher. I guess all he can do is keep doing the good job he is and continue to hand out tasks evenly between everyone (as I'm sure he's doing). Perhaps he could keep a record of the things he gets everyone to do so if a situation like this arises again he can show that he's distributing work fairly .

Whiners like that should just leave work and let others get on with the job!!

I had that when I worked at McDonalds. I often had to task jobs for people older than me and they just had to deal with the fact they had a manager that was younger than them. Your DH has every right to give this guy tasks to do and the older guy should do what is asked of him by his manager and get over the fact he has a younger boss.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

maybe your DH needs to see if a competitor supermarket needs a manager or similar job, that would show them! Then they would see what a great job your DH was doing and know that their competition has him now!
But no they cant do that! Not at all, your DH is the manager no matter what age he is or the age of the other workers Your DH needs to see the union

Thanks Girls

Yeah, he is still pretty angry, and is going to speak to the other boss tomorrow, as he has had a guts full of not being respected.
We still cant believe all this started over a bloody list, its pathetic! and the lady that did the meeting thinks the other guy is awesome, so took his side and just knocked my poor DH down whenever he tried to make valid points,

Makes me so wild, I felt like going in there and giving them a earful! But I shant....lol

What a crock, both of my staff are 30 years older than me and they certainly do what I tell them. Either he is the guys manager or he isn't, if he is then he can tell him what he would like him to do, otherwise they have to change the reporting lines. What a joke!

Why did they make him a manager if they were not going to let him act like a manager?

Think he needs to stand up to them or look elsewhere, cause if upper management are not going to respect him & back him up then the people working under him wont & if they think they can run to higher management when he does or says something they will.

Sucks big time

I'm the same as summerlamb, back a couple of years ago I was managing a team of 15 and 75% of them were older than me, some 30 years older and they had to listen to me because I was the manager! Age is irrelevant.
Your DH shouldn't put up with their crap, if they are saying stuff like that there must be more to it.
