Emma's gremlins have backpacks and they are so good. If I lived in a main centre I would look at getting one for Josh.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I think they're a good idea. If she has a habit of running off then better some people think you're cruel than she ends up under a car IMO.

If you don't want to go for full on reins how about one of those backpacks with the strap on the back?

I don't think they cruel at all, not sure where the idea of reins being so came from.
If its to keep you and your kid together, better than them running off and getting hurt or lost.
I've seen ones where you have round your wrist and her wrist with like a cord running between.

I agree if she has a tendency to run off from you then its far kinder that she is tethered to you rather than be at risk from a car or getting lost. I've seen cute backpack type ones that dont look like reins as much but pffft to what anyone else thinks - if anyone dared be rude enough to say anything just have a stock reply of Better the reins than under a car.

My little brother had to have them when he was a toddler as he was a shocker for running off but the other two kids didnt need them, every kid is different.

I think if you need them then get them! Reins or the backpack that is really reins ... like the others have said - better those than under a car! What does it matter what other people think? They don't have to chase your wee girl round do they? Loads of people use them over here. It's great that your LO can walk on her own rather than need to be in a stroller but you still have control over where she's going.

Caitlyn had them , id rather people thought I was being "cruel " having them wear them , than having her run off.
Because quite frankly that would have been cruel not only to her , but to me , losing my girl would be the cruelest thing that could happen to me (and losing my boy of course, and DF too ) .

Unfortunatley its a bit more uncommon for a 6 year old to wear reins, pity , she needs them at times...

I think it's much more cruel for her to run out infront of a moving car so I'm all for harnesses.

I'm quite happy to tell people my opinion on them too but sadly no one ever questioned my decision to use a harness  I jiffied our harness so I was attached to it too (by the wrist) leaving my hands free to carry things and hold her hand.

As Becks and Bobbie mentioned if you want to have the security of a harness but don't want to invite other peoples opinions then the backpacks are a great option.

I have one of the little back pack ones too. Its very cute!! A fluffy puppy, and the tail is the bit you hold onto. I only used it a couple of times with Alex, as he wasn't a runner.... but I think Soph will be, and I will use it if I need to. Who cares what other people think!!

We used the wrist strap one which was great as I could still hold hands easily with him but he could also wander away from me a bit and have his independence. I did get a few funny looks from people but I didn't really care to be honest - I think safety's more important than what people think of you!

Just be careful with purchasing on TM, we bought the ones from the link below and I found it to be rather crappy & flimsy and the actual backpack was just made of thin material ...the head was stuffed and the straps were flimsy.

Link

I know these ones are a lot pricier but they're THE ORIGINAL harness buddy backpacks (emma has these ones i think) ...you can pick them up at kmart for maybe a bit cheaper and without postage costs.

I got a poodle backpack one from KMart, Bella likes to wear it around the house just as a backpack, so when I do need to use it, I know she will think she is just wearing her backpack. They actually look really cute, and if anyone says anything, tell them where to go!!
