Right ready for a big whinge. I went to see a lawyer last year re visitations custody etc. Was expecting a bill from them within 2 weeks after the appointment and didnt so forgot all about it only to get a bill this year - 5 1/2 mths after the appointment!! Now I thik thats shocking to take that long and I was abit miffed so I did take wee while to pay the bill which was bad on my part and it was only for $56.
Anyway when I went into pay I asked why it took so long and the recept. told me oh sometimes we put files down and get to them when we can.
Now I thought that was very unprofessional but was abit dumbfounded at the time so didnt say anything. Anyway its been bugging me so I rang this morn and got the owner.
Introduced myself and explained the situation to which he said nothing so I said dont you think thats along time to take to send out a bill and he just said "duly notes thanks" and hung up.
Well I was abit annoyed at this so rang back and said to him you hung up on me. Well it turned into an argument with him saying it was only for $50 anyway and we gave you plenty of time to pay it which i said well i paid it in a shorter time than it took to send the bill ( i also rang them and said i would be late paying it previously).
Anyway I told him that i thought it was unprofessional and wouldnt be using their services or recommending them to which he said I dont care.
He did said it was noted after i had paid the bill so why didnt he tell me that to start off with??
All i wanted was them to know that they had made a boob and to be aware in the future. He was so condesending and dismissive to me.
I thought it was very poor service and even though my bill was only for $56 whose to say a custody battle wont start with my ex (ok maybe not lol)and they could have made alot of money off me (well legal aid anyway) but i know heaps of wealthy ppl here and wont be saying anything nice about them.
My thing is he dealt with a small problem really badly when he could have just said to me "oh we noted that yesterday and thanks for ringing to to my attention have a good day" but he he turned into a pompus selfrighous lawyer (sorry dont mean to offend anyone he just made me mad).
Now i think i am valid in my feelings - do you agree?
Also are all lawyers like this as I have had no experience with them?

Thats really terrible. I don't know what you could do about it, but I would be spreading the word that he is a rude son of a b.... I don't think all lawyers are like this. I havn't really had any experience with them personally, but I have friends who have had great lawyers, and also my mum works for a lawyer who is really nice. So don't be put off lawyers completely, there are nice ones out there. But god that is terrible...can't believe how rude he was!!!

Wow ! That just puts pay to some of the bad lawyer stereotypes that are out there, he deserves all the bad gossip you can give him really ! Not all lawyers are like that though, I have known one or two in the past that are absolute gems. If you need one in future, and I sincerely hope you don't, I hope they aren't as rude as that guy.

Well I have had a situation with a lawyer recently that makes me think that they have HUGE egos which need constant stroking. It's a long story but basically we are having a battle with our local Council over a boundary issue and after negotiating with them for a year and a half and getting nowhere, we consulted with a lawyer. Anyway, he sent letters that were just like the ones we had spent the last 18 months writing, and he wasn't getting any quicker or better response than what we were, so I decided to ask him to stop acting on our behalf for the time being as we were going to deal directly with the Mayor to see if we could come to a conclusion. (we were afraid the lawyers bills may get out of control and we may not have a good outcome anyway) Anyway, he spat the dummy and told me that I had told him to 'bugger off' (which I definately did not!) and that he knew what he was doing as he was an expert and good luck to us and blah blah blah. He wouldn't let me get a word in, so I decided to bite my tongue and not let my temper flare up as I would normally do as when messing with an ego that big there is no winning.

I deal with lawyers all the time, and for the odd nice one that comes along, most are rude and arogant and just awful to speak with. They all seem to think that it is my job to drop everything I am doing to service their needs. I have gotten quite angry with them in the past, and the ruder they are it seems the slower the job gets done

hmmm not sure if I should comment or not as I have worked in law firms from when I first got a full time job but there are lots of lovely lawyers out there. In your instance Marlene yeah that is a bit long in getting a bill but often they dont really care about the little ones like that so the file can be put to the side and its not till they do a time clean out that they notice it hasnt been billed, slack but it does happen, but his attitude was out of line and he should never have spoken to you like that. I find a lot of the older lawyers or sole practicioners are really arrogant. He should be happy you paid, you would not believe the number of clients who dont pay thier bills, its like they think because you dont have something material in thier hands they dont justify paying the bill. You can always complain the the NZ law society about lawyers if you have any complaints.

Oh MArlene, that sucks! But you know why he was so rude I think? Becasue you are "just" a silly mother. Obviously you "got yourself into trouble" and now need a lawyer to sort it out. Don't you realise that he is probably so much better than you. You didn't bow down to him enough and thank him for his amazing services! And to have the cheek to suggest something was wrong with his office!

Find a nice lawyer! I'm sure there must be some around!

Thats what i thought too Liz - you absolutley hit the nail on the head. i have already started my campaigne against them and have informed a few folk of this mans poor attitude. The funny thing was i didnt see the man i talked to today when i had my original appointment.
The lawyer i did see was nice even if he gave me no help.

Oh well life goes on but I must admit i took great delight in knowing i started his work day off badly hehe. Evil huh
