charli has always had rasby/rattly/snuffly breathing since birth and i had to take her to the hospital to have a sweat test for cystic fibrosis....this involves holding a thingee on her upper arm (for 5mins) which shoots tiny electrodes to encourage her to sweat. she didn't like it at all, i thought it was because she was hungry so i fed her and then when the lady took it off......her arm was burnt!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it happened on the other arm also. one was really deep, both about a cm sq. i had to go see the hospital photographer so he could take some pics for acc if needed later and i had a lady from the plastics unit see her so it took forever! i went there at 10.30am and didn't leave until 1.30pm!
the nurse that did it felt so bad she had to leave the room. my poor girl! i was almost in tears but charli was so good she didn't really fuss too much, what a champ
i have to go back on monday so they can have another look to check for infections, so far it looks ok.

after all that, they are not sure if they got enough sweat off her arms to do the test!!
i am NOT going through that again so tough sh*t if they didn't get enough. she's had blood tests a few weeks ago which came back negative and the heel prick test at birth came back negative so now i'm thinking i put my wee girl through that 'just to be sure'

apparently it's a very rare thing to happen and the lady apologised for not warning me about it first. i could tell how upset she was so i didn't go off at her.
she said she's never doing the test on babies again

Oh no! Poor Charli, poor you and poor nurse!
I hope they heal up quickly and that there are no scars or infections.

That'd be the last thing you'd expect to have happen!  That's horrible, Vanessa - must've been a fright.  You poor wee things...  I don't blame you for not doing the sweat test again.  Must be another way to get the girl sweating, eh... especially in heat like we've been having!

Hugs Vanessa and Charli - that sounds awful! It is so hard to watch our wee ones go thru yucky stuff like that and I remember when it took them an hour to get an IV line in Sienna with her blue from screaming thinking "why are we doing this?" But I guess the only positive is that you will have some peace of mind that she doesn't have CF.

Hi vanessa - I have managed to find my way around the forums to find this, so I now know what a sweat test is - that's awful!! Hopefully things are getting better

the burns are looking different today. instead of a red colour they are white so i'm assuming they are healing...?
