Topic: Im SO nervous & to be honest a bit scared Posted: 05 October 2007 at 10:51am |
Ok. I havent worked (other than at home of course!)for the last 5 years give or take a month or 2... and my last job interview was 8 years ago... but I have an interview on Tuesday!
Im just wanting to work part time in the same sort of area I was in before. I applied online yesterday and got the call this morning!!
So now the rush is on for clothes/shoes/references!!
Has anyone else been through the scarey interview thing after being out of work for sooo long?? Any tips for me?!
Thanks

Talk to Busymum she has just gone back to work after a few years out of the workforce.
But good luck for Tuesday.

Relax and be yourself
Just think of it as meeting someone new and they just want to know a wee bit more about you.

I have interviewed a lot of staff and heres my advice
Before you go in have it clear in your head why you want the job, where you want to be in 5 years, why skills and attributes you have that make you the best person for the job. these questions are asked in 90% of all interviews.
Prepare a question or two to ask them, shows that you have thought about the job / company and are interested.
do a background on the company, learn as much as you can.
Be honest, tell them your streignths and weeknesses.
Don't ramble on (especially about personal stuff), keep it professional, highlight your streignths, give relevant examples then wait for the next question from them. Eg i am a very organised person, this has been shown by my role as the treasurer of xyz kindergarten.
If they highlight a weekness hamburger it. EG if they ask you what your excel skills are like and they are not good then say something along thelines of the following....I have good computer skills, however excel is not a program that i have had much to do with, i am a fast learner however and keen to learn new programmes.
the hamburger technique involves lead with a positive, put in the negitive finish with a positive, leaves a positive impression overall.
Smile and try to look relaxed, confidence goes a loong way make lots of eye contact, clarify any question you are unsure about (this can be a nice stall tactic to think of your answer as well)
Good Luck and i hope some of this helps

I had a lovely girl here the other day who was probably more than competent ... but she was soo quiet, I just couldnt picture her in a management role.

Hi all the best for Tuesday!!! I've just had my first week back at work after 4yrs. Luckily I didn't have to be interviewed though as I already knew these guys as colleagues from 4yrs back in my last role. I just told them I had 6yrs experience and had left to have a family; now had 3 kids and was looking for work again.... yea I know, kinda simple. Hope yours goes through as easily!

Thank you!
Busymum I guess you didnt get the nervousness then?
Im sure if I can deal with the kids I can handle anything! LOL
I have kind of set my own requirements in regards to pay and hours etc. So hopefully I can get what I want! If I cant get the hours I want I just cant do it really. I cant do too much juggling with the kids!

i JUST GOT PART-TIME WORK (oops caps on) after a few years off - think of each interview as you also interviewing them into how well you think their company would fit into your life. I find that helps with the nerves. i went for aninterview with Glassons and at the end had already decide it wasn't going to fit in with me, after asking a few questions. made me feel not intimidated by the bos lady.

Thanks for all the luck.
It went well. Now I just have to decide what to do! Whether or not its worth working at the moment or just too much stress for an extra little bit of money! LOL
The lady wants me to ring her and let her know if I want one of the jobs on offer... I can take it just til xmas but its full time 845 -445 and if I like it I could carry on after our holiday in Jan.
Sooo confused now!!

It is temping.. on a 3 month contract that rolls over so I can take it on trial. Just have to think about it a bit more!
It was stupid today I got all teary walking through the supermarket because Liam started singing the hot potato song and doing the actions when we were in the vege department.... he has never done the song or actions before and I thought "wow if I was at work today I would have missed that." I think I just have to get past the guilt!! I have no idea why I feel this way though!
