Topic: help! wicked nappy rash Posted: 18 August 2007 at 10:59pm |
Kaleb has had a pretty nasty looking nappy rash for the last week. He has never had it before and the redness seems to be spreading .
When it was just a tiny amount I used Sudocream but then it got worse so tried bepanthen(?) and seemed to get a little better but still spread. I also have a zinc&castor oil cream, the ecostore one and a cocoa butter one. Which one would you recommend? (Oh also tried curash at beginning too but he was redder afterwards)
We use the J&J nappy liners in his nappies and have always used Ecostore washing powder (tried Next Generation last week but went off when rash started). If I use wipes (usually only with poo ) they are always the sensitive ones - and we use the Huggies sensitive bath wash. All things we have been doing all along.
At every nappy change (every 3hours max in day) I give him some nappy off time (except night) then I wipe him down with a wet cloth and dry off before applying more cream. It doesn't seem to be getting any better. HELP!
The only new thing I think it could be is the fact he is now taking 2.5ml of lactulose a day and that this could make his urine stronger? Could it be this? Or the start of teething?
What else can I do to get rid of it? Is my only option to go to doc?

Kathryn, do you think it could be a heat rash? Sorry I can't be of any more help, but will be interested to see what people say. When Sam and I were out on Friday shopping with Julie & Caleb she developed a rash. I thought it was a heat rash, but seems to have spread to the folds in her legs and her whole tummy! I have been putting hydrocortisone cream on it, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better! I am thinking the doctor will have to be the answer if it is no better by Monday!
Oh, I should add that Samantha gets a really nasty red rash if we use any of the wipes you can buy. Even the extra sensitive, non allergenic, blah, blah etc etc bring her out in a terrible rash. We now use little flannel wipes in a little water with a couple of drops of tea tree oil in it. It works a treat!

jade used to get terrible nappy rash- we were using baby wipes too and stopped, started to use wet musliny type cloth. i also swear by cornflour- it works really well. i find that kayla gets really bad nappy rash when she is teething so it could be possible if there are no other changes- or maybe kaleb is just getting sensitive to something? hard to say- could it be a thrush type rash? maybe go to your doctor and get it checked? jade had to get micreme a few time when she was a baby to help hers.
all the best- it is soooooooooo awful when their little bottoms are sore breaks my heart when i see them in pain from it. i hope kaleb's bottom feels better soon xxoo

go to the doctor! it's free and they can give you tubes and tubes of an anti-fungal cream that clears up nappy rash really quick. you clean THOROUGHLY, then put that cream on, then put a barrier cream on, and the rash clears up within a day usually. I found my boys got nasty rashes when they teethed and the prescribed cream was the only one that made a big difference.

i dont know how old your bub is but maybe more frequent changing and nappy off time... and i agree about the wipes and maybe stop putting stuff in his bath water for a while too...and yeah get the docs to have a look in case it isnt ordinary old nappy rash.

Thanks. I have Kaleb bathing in the sun at the moment. His rash is bigger than ever. Very red . We have stopped using wipes except to collect the poo but clean him up with cloth and always do cloth wipes with water and then dry him after using a disposable wipe too. We have only been using a tiny amount of bath liquid in his bath but I will cut that out for a while too.
Think the best bet is to take him to doc - better safe than sorry! (esp. with it spreading despite us using stuff...)

Yep, take him to doc.
When Han had a bad rash I had to cut out all wipes and soapy stuff. I used bepanthen and gave her heeeeeaps of free bum time.
Curash seemed to do good things too... the powder.
I hope you get it sorted soon! Poor little man.

Poor Kaleb! But it really sounds like you're doing so much already to clear it up. The antifungal cream that the doc prescribes combats thrush that tends to appear when they get a bad nappy rash. And hey - it's free to get him checked out. Also, are you using cloth or disposables? Don't shoot me, you good people using cloth fully... but disposables might just be worth a try until the rash clears up? As great at MCN's are, the 'sposies do seem to draw moisture away from their bums faster and more effectively.

We used disposables for a couple of days last week so I could wash all his nappies in the Ecostore powder and give them heaps of sunlight. Rash still continued to 'spread'. Used a sposie last night too to try again and still very red this morning.

I wonder if teeth or food reaction is keeping the rash still in the system somehow?

i totally sympathise with you here!!! charli has had a nasty butt rash for weeks now. it was just starting to get better after the last flare up when her bottom teeth came through, now her top ones are almost here so the red rash is back with a vengence
we've tried 3 different creams from the drs and none of them really do anything. i give her plenty of nappy free time, use cloth wipes only, she's had a week in sposies with no change, i always use barrier cream yada yada yada.....
maybe kaleb is getting some teeth soon and that's why it's flared up?? i hope you have some joy at the dr's, it's no fun for bubs or mum

Has Kaleb started solids? Are you breastfeeding? Just wondering cos Hannah got a horrible nappy rash about that age that lasted for months. Tried every cream under the sun until realising it was food that I was eating affecting her. Disposables didnt get rid of it for us either, in fact I have usually found they make it worse. Hope it clears up soon.

We were going to try Kaleb on solids this weekend but decided against it until we know what may have caused the rash. He is bottle fed and has been on the same formula for a while now.
We are booked into docs this afternoon so I hope the creams work for us!

My little girl is going through a nappy rash at the moment and I am using daktozin (an anti-fungal ointment from the chemist) although you could probably get it on prescription? and it seems to be drying the 'pimples' up. She's in disposables and we use Johnsons nappy liners dunked in boiled cooled water to wipe her butt and to dry it.

Well doc didn't think it was that bad - he started to tell me about some that are weepy and crusty so I guess I'm glad I took him before it got any worse. He gave me a script for Micreme and I've just put it on Kaleb. Hopefully won't take too long for it to clear up. He did suggest it might be the brand of disposable we're using at moment (feel pretty guilty coz we've used a few over the last week while we washed all his nappies, overnight...). He did say it probably isn't the lactulose i.e. he's never heard of it causing a rash but who knows

We have always had a tube of micreme on hand, actually we had micreme-H which is a touch stronger, & yep we have had the weepy, crusty, & sometimes bleeding rashes which ar not very comfortable for our babies wee bums but always found within 1-2 applications it had started to clear.
You can also use some barrier cream over top of the micreme
Good luck hope he gets better soon

A bit late, but if he reacts to the curash it could be he is sensitive to zinc. We found out the hard way that Lily was - a bit pink one day, put zinc cream on it as reccomended, skin was red raw the next. Didn't realise for ages it was the cream so was using Daktozin which is zinc based, along with the doctors stuff and of course it didn't get better!. Now we use bepanthen and it works as it isnt zinc based - I know i didn't work fully for you, but ti may pay to stay away from zinc based creams in the future as a preventative.
