Topic: Bearing Weight Posted: 12 February 2009 at 11:29pm |
Jackson does not like bearing weight on his legs, in particular his left leg.
A couple of days ago it occurred to me that I should be encouraging him more. When I first tried to stand him up he just went all floppy on me and refused. He has got heaps better over the last couple of days, but really doesn't like putting weight on his left leg. He will roll his foot inwards, to the side, or he will just lift that leg or let it go floppy. Should I be concerned, or is this just because it is not his dominant leg? Or just because he is not used to it?
The leg doesn't seem sore, and he had his hips checked when he was born, but I am confused as to why he is adverse on one leg only. I'd be less worried if it were both, but he has quickly got quite good at putting weight on the right one.
Anyone else experience this? Or should I see my GP?

I think Emz had the same thing with Jack (although he did initially stand, then wouldnt) .. turned out he had an infection in his bone, so it wouldnt hurt to go to the doc and check it out.

plunket should be checking his hips every check up. Natalie had suspected clicky hips, but has been given the all-clear now, however for a long time also favoured one leg over the other. I think the joints can still be quite loose until they get used to having their legs in a 'bi-pedal' mode (rather than out to the sides). Definitely get his hips checked again, but it might just be that he needs more practise to feel comfortable bearing weight on both legs. (the jolly jumper - in limited episodes - is good too).

Thanks for the replies. I have a paediatrician appointment on the 24th and Plunket on the 16th so will ask then. He doesn't seem to have pain, so I don't think I need to rush to the doctor.
Interesting about Plunket.... they have never checked his hips! I had a check done at the hospital, but that is it. Reiterates my dissatisfaction with Plunket.
He does go for a short time in his JJ each day, I notice he always tends to 'kick off' with the right foot and not the left. He does appear to have a slightly ingrown toenail on the left foot. I wonder if that could cause him to not want to stand on it?

i think ingrown toenails are quite common, and probably not causing him pain but you never know!?
and clicky hips are much more common in girls, so maybe that's why they're not checking, but even in the well-child book there is a box to tick off for hips! Another sign (for clicky hips) is that the creases in the legs are uneven.
i think it's only been in the last month that Natalie has started bearing weight evenly, and using both legs to push off from.

I personally wouldn't worry too much at 4 months old, he may just be sorting it all out for himself, but I'll share my experience anyway seeing as LF has noted it above.
DS was taking steps etc and then all of a sudden stopped and wouldn't let me straighten his legs etc. Turned out he had a right hip bone infection and he was in hospital for a week (just got out on Tuesday) on IV antibiotics and now oral AB's for a month. Now I'm in no way saying your boy has this, but just thought I'd mention it if you continue being worried about it. Bone infections can be caused by anything - more common in crawlers, they can get a bump, cut or nothing at all and still get it. In Jack's case, he had really bad gums from teething and they reckon that may have caused a hip infection. Go figure.
Anyway, like I said I wouldn't be too worried at his age but if you are, it doesn't hurt going to the doctor. And yes your well child provider should be checking his hips every visit.
