I should have fallen asleep, tired today! The lady adopted the little girl and tried to BF her, but it didn't work that well. She ended up feeding her some breast milk off a spoon. I think she was going to keep trying but the programme didn't update after that.
The seven year old still wanted to BF but was losing the ability to suck, got really annoyed with her mum as she thought she had 'emptied her breasts'. The bit that made me a bit uncomfortable was the seven year old saying she just wanted to suckle even without getting any milk...
The twins were weaned succssfully...was that it?

The girl that had been breastfed till 8 and her sister till 5 were utterly obsessed with breasts! I nearly choked when the girl said that she wished she could grow breasts to suck on them herself. She was smacking her mother on the breast too! I saw the clip on youtube as well where she was drawing breasts, talking about breasts, writing about breasts. Everything was about breasts to her. I wonder how that will affect her when she's an adult!

He gave her a few sideways glances. But the girl was seriously not interested. I mean she had only just met the woman, she was about 6 months old I guess and I just can't comprehend that she would want her to breastfeed. Is it silly to think that you should really only breastfeed your own biological children?
Oh and the bit about the girls suckling on the grandmas dried up old boob freaked me a bit too..

Little girl was 18 months old actually and I think it will take a lot of work to make her want to bf. My question is why? If you are hell bend on the benefits like me I rather express and give her the milk then.

Oh man, 18 months! I'm so terrible at determining how old babies are! No wonder she wouldn't breastfeed! She'd never done it before!

I don't know if it was just me, but I found the lady who had the young boy and adopted the chinese baby and tried to force her onto her breast disturbed me.
Maybe I was looking at it from the wrong way, but the little girl didn't want her boob!
Do other women breastfeed adopted children?
I just didn't understand. |
There is a lot of people that tries to BF adopted babies. They want a close bond with the kids. Many adopted babies also have a problem with bonding and it helps quite a lot.
I am in two minds about trying to BF a toddler that has never before. Like I said before if it is due to the benefits of BFding and the milk I rather express and give it. To try and breastfeed a toddler that has never before might just freak the poor child out even more and be counter productive.
If I had to adopt a baby, I most propably will also try to BF. If it was a newborn and I didnt have milk I would have gone the drug route to be able too.
But then that is just me.

I found the nearly 8 year old's obsession with breasts a little bit OTT too.
I find Benjy big to hold while I feed him now, I was trying to imagine 7 years down the track, still having him try to snuggle in for a feed and was quite weirded out.
It seemed to me that the boob for her, was like thumb sucking, or having a security blanket or dummy, she just seemed too old for it to be sweet or cute anymore.

I found the whole thing a bit disturbing. I mean I totally admire Mum's who can be so giving that they breasfeed for ages, but unless something drastic changes when I give birth (I guess anything's possible) my plan is if I am successful at BF'ing I will do it for a while for the baby's benefit, but I want my body back as soon as possible! I was thinking a year at the absolute most... I guess we will see!
I found the tandem feeding Mum of twins a bit distressing. She looked so worn out and harrassed and bedraggled... I guess I'm in for a reality check!

I watched and that 8 year old and her sister were not healthy. Obsessing like that is wrong.
I did like what the woman did with the baby she adopted. Good on her for giving it a go, but I think she should of just let it be as the girl didn't want to feed.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Renee I do know someone who adopted and then bf her... but I'm talking about a newborn, not someone over a year old! I don't think I would have bothered trying after 3-6mos let alone that age
I didn't see the program but while I was at the doctors the other day I saw a (Woman's Weekly?) mag on bf-ing and there was a photo of a 3yo bf-ing. She looked a bit older than my Hannah. over 2yrs (or maybe even 18mos) is a bit weird for me.

I recorded the show and just finished watching it. Since it was a documentary I was hoping I would learn something new and interesting about breastfeeding, but it was really just showing women popping out their boobs and breastfeeding their children.
Well, I know everyone has their own opinions about the lady feeding the 8 year old, and mine personally was that it was just...icky.. Sounds hypocritical I know since I was sitting there breastfeeding Alyssa while watching it but still... the 8 y.o girl was a little so and so as well! haha

I was sent a really great article on a woman who successfully breastfeed her adopted baby and the baby was around 6 months...there was also a similar story of BF an adopted toddler.
I personally think those women were amazing and were totally inspirational to me when I was trying to relactate (something I did not share with people on here). I have nothing but admiration for them.

I actually have no problem with a 3 or 4 year old toddler still nursing.
I do want to see if McKayla wants to wean when she turns 2. Hopefully before 3 so we can ttc. If she gets interrested afterwards with bubs I wont have a problem as I dont think the curiousity will last that long anyway.
A lot of countries the average age of weaning is actually 4 believe it or not. (and that include the moms that feed only for 6 months so some of the ages are a lot older.)
I dont see myself BFding a 8 year old however. Cant explain it but it is definately not for me.

Dang I totally forgot about the program our le leish league (?SP) kady who came to visit antenatal last night mentioned it. I know of a lady who adpoted a newborn & is breastfeeding him but i do not believe in forcing the issue if a child is going to breastfeed then thats great but if not i dont feel its worth sweating over.
FYI breastmilk has a pain relief factor in it which is why its great for teething children & why a child seeks it when upset.
As for an 8 year old still BF I dont think thats very healthy at all.......
