A friend of mine who has just visited from Australia with his baby has told me that under the Warsaw Convention all airlines have to carry baby buggies free of charge. I have never heard of this. Does anyone know if my friend is
a) Correct
b) Wrong
or
c) Mad
I hope he is right as we are flying in Feb and it would be great if we could carry on DDs buggy as we have been given zero luggage allowance for her

I just googled it (warsaw convention) but couldn't find any specific info re buggies.. however he may very well be right. I have heard of many people taking on buggies but from what I've heard there was a restriction on how bulky they are.. (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Why not contact your airline, they will be able to set the record straight

Depends on the airline. Jetstar you get two free pieces of baby luggage (e.g. car seat, pram), Qantas and Air NZ I think it's the same though with Q and AirNZ you usually get a small luggage allowance as well.

i am going to contact them tomorrow but wanted to check first that i wasn't being totally wound-up by my friend (who likes a joke) and made to sound like an insane ass

we took a valco stroller like an umbrella stroller when we went to aussie a few weeks ago. They didn't even weigh it in auckland. they just put a heavy or bulky tag on it and the baggage sticker and we could have it right up until boarding. they they took it to load on the plane. we didn't carry it on, to bulky and awkward.
In aussie we had to check it in at oversized baggage but they didn't weight it their either so it didn't count towards final weight.
every one was great about it, we even used a loan pram when we arrived back in auckland. It was midnight Luke was asleep and i was struggling to carry him at 2.5 years old and me 27 weeks preg a that time they must have felt sorry for me!

Yep the pram and carseat (if you are taking one) are free (if using Air NZ or Qantas, Im not sure about other airlines)
Im not sure if it has anything to do with the warsaw convention, I would have thought it had more to do with company policy as companies like jetstar make you pay for luggage little own a pram

Thanks for that - I'm going Pacific Blue if anyone knows anything about their policy? Cheaper flights may mean no baby luggage i guess
Ok - if i can't take the buggy on does anyone know if there is a buggy hire place in Sydney airport so we can hire one for the week we are there? Also, i seem to remember someone asking about travel from the airport and whether the taxis/shuttles have child seats?? Anyone remember this? And if they come with baby seats?

Check-in limits
Specific Infant Equipment is carried free of charge on Virgin Blue and Pacific Blue domestic flights. All other infant baggage will be included as part of the parent or guardian’s purchased/free baggage allowance.
Items of infant equipment include but are not restricted to:
Pram/stroller
Portable cot
Car seat
Baby capsule
Carry-on Baggage
If you are travelling with an infant you may carry-on an extra bag containing articles for use in the cabin such as nappies or baby food.

hope the above is true for international flights Flissty! I will be able to take her car seat and buggy then (and you can guarantee she will have her own carry-on bag packed full!)

Yup - just phoned them and i can take portacot, buggy and car seat as above. Hoorah and Hoozah!
Be interesting to find out about this Warsaw Convention thingy . . .. when my friend first mentioned it i could only think of the Warsaw Pact signed after World War One and thought it seemed a starnge thing to have to agree to!

I think your friend is right, but I think she made up the name!!!
When flying air nz they were fine, in fact I was amazed at the size of buggies people check in, when travelling with a little one you will find you are questioned less about the volume of stuff.

The Warsaw Convention is real and possibly does talk about baby stuff, here's the Wikipedia link Warsaw Convention
I haven't flown Jetstar in NZ or Aussie since I had Callum but we flew with them to Bali in June and they definitely don't weigh the stroller or count it as extra baggage, Callum didn't get his own luggage allowance though.

When we flew to Samoa in May last year with Vincent, he still sat on our knee & the lil umbrella stroller we took (cos i didnt wanna risk my big one getting damaged) was taken off us at the gate. we could use it up until then. That was with Pacific Blue.
Whilst in Sydney Susie, you can hire buggies. We hired one & i can't remember where from, & they deliver & pick it up from wherever you need it.
Just google it i would suggest, but there are deffinately baby equipment hire places in oz.
