What are your thoughts on Kirby vacuum cleaners and the salespeople?
I just had my first ever encounter with a Kirby salesperson (most door to door salespeople don't bother hiking all the way up our drive, yay!) and after hearing so many horror stories from people about salespeople who stay for hours and won't leave until you agree to buy one, I was too scared to let him into my house!
I'm interested to hear of any experiences you guys have had with them.

Hate them. Sorry but I have always found them rude and refuse to leave even when our total lack of carpet it pointed out to them so they can't vaccum it!!!

Well i have two experiences:
1. SOme sale men came to our house, did the show. it took three hours Almost brought it until i realised that it would cost $4000 for a vacuum!! I was like, ah, i dont think so buddy! The salesment themselves were pretty pushy and i think it could have been due to the pushyness that i almost brought it! luckily, DH was hiding in the other room, away form the sale people and i went to ask him. He quickly brought me back down to earth!!!
2. I have a friend who sold them. she was a seller for only a month and try as she might she could not sell! she did a showing for me as practise, and while it was there she let me *ahem* vacuum my entire house and do the entire bed.. OK so that was probably naughty of her, but hey! i now have clean carpets..
Admittedly they are very good vacuums, but there is no way i am paying $4000 for a vacuum!!!

My brother was a salesman many years ago, it was great we got our mattress and carpets throroughly cleaned every couple of weeks and he did loads of practice pitches to us, but he was a useless salesman and only lasted 6 months, i don't think he earnt a lot in that time.
But as for the hard sell, they are told not to except no, but certainly I wouldn't have expected my brother to barracadehimself in.
sorry not much help, but reminded me of a very funny 6 months in my brother's varied career
Oh and this was in the UK

A guy I used to work with was a Kirby salesman.
The stories he told me made him sound like a complete nightmare-pushy-prick.
He was so proud of all the sales he made because he would "put my foot in their doorway so they couldn't shut the door on me and I could just work my way into their house while I talked to them".
He had a Kirby that he brought into work to clean the carpets.
It did an OK job... but I was put off by his constant spiel about them.

Omg they sales people are sooo pushy!! We almost brought one we got told it was going to be $3000 inclusive of everything including intrest over 2 years, but when i got out the calculator and added it up myself i found they were scaming us big time and was going to cost $5500 all up. So an embaressed Kirby salesman was told to pack up and leave. Admitidly i think they are great that they can get so much crap out of my carpet which i thought was clean. But they dont tell you that once you clean all of the dust mites and mud etc out of your carpet it doesnt need a good clean like that for a few months. Plus its soo big and bulky and hard to manuver not to mention looks so ugly and 70's

Give me my dyson anyday it cleans better than my old lux and is heaps cheaper than a kirby. Man for that much money you would hope it shampoos and drys the carpet as well!!!!
The poor kirby man that ever comes to our door DP doesnt take any push crap and would probably tell the guy to stuff off and he will get one on trademe if he wants one and if he gets me would make him clean the whole house to prove how good it was then tell him no and charge him for the waste of my power

Next time I wont allow them in. I will smack the door in their face if they force their way in. They are seriously crafty. McKayla was sick that day and they came in and told me that they want to clean the carpets as an demonstration and if we like the service we must jsut let other people know about it. They made it sound as if it was a carpet cleaning service.
Once they came in, the other guy left with the car so even if he got thrown out he had no where to go. He ended up staying 4 hours. Our furniture havent even arrived yet so an empty house and he kept on with his sales pitch. I told him that I thought this was just a cleaning service and he told me yeah that is how we get in but he will ask me at the end and only then if I say no he will leave. Nice enough but bloody pushy. When I heard the price I wanted to seriously laugh. He still had the cheek to tell me do I want it and told him my husband will kill me for the insurance money to pay for the stupid thing and I dont buy stuff like this without his say so.
Ha he told me do I live in the middle ages. Mmmmm well I dont want to live in a grave.

If hubby wanted to spend $2k+ he'd better be asking me first, too!
What a moron.
It's one thing to have pushy salespeople call on the phone, it's another to have them barge into your house.
To be fair, they don't get paid if they don't sell.
But still.
You don't talk to people IN THEIR OWN HOME like that.
*nb: been up since 5:30 and had two coffees. A little bit jittery

Everything I've heard about their sales strategy is the same, and negative!
Its a wonder they ever sell anything!! (or that they don't get their butts kicked for that matter!)
I was telling DH about all the stories last night and he said, 'they must be exaggerating!' So I googled it and came up with the same stories on message boards everywhere.
So glad I didn't let him in now! I almost felt sorry for him because he was all puffed and sweaty from hiking up the driveway (Esp if he was dragging that huge Kirby with him, lol) and he looked so baffled when I read his jacket and said "KIRBY?!? Eeek no I'm definitely not interested, sorry!" and shut the door before he got his rapidly advancing foot in. He even stood on the step for a few moments afterwards... maybe wondering where he went wrong with such an awesome sales strategy?
Do you live in the middle ages my rrrrse! I don't know anyone, wealthy or otherwise who wouldn't consult with their partner before spending that much! Particularly on a vacuum!

I had them come over yesterday..they were nearly and hour late and stayed for a couple of hours after being told it would only take half and hour.
The Kirby is very good and my carpets are looking great but at that price I DONT THINK SO!
Um i said NO i would'nt be able to afford their weekly payments .....but the weekly payments were still the same...after they left we did the calculations and if we had taken it out over 3 years we would have ended up paying $4836 with no deposit at $31 a week.
It took me ages to get them to leave they keep trying to make me feel guilty...saying things like i have one child and one on the way do i really want them to be crawling around on this floor!
Dont think i will ever open my door to them again!!

My parents have one (not the salesman, the vacuum cleaner!)
It's fantastic, but back when they bought it I think it was only about $1000 so not bad at all.
As for the salesman, I remember still not having had tea at 9.30pm when he finally left and me and my sister were absolutely nuts (were about 7 & 9 at the time)

I wouldn't let them in the door because I can't bear door-to-door selling or telemarketing. But years ago my parents bought one - and yep, the salesman stayed for HOURS. It worked well at first, but in all honesty I think it works much like a regular vac now... and worse still because once mum accidentally vacummed over some dog vomit - and for about 5 years the smell of dog vomit would appear every time she vacummed. Disgusting. I haven't heard of that happening with any other vac. DH bought an industrial wet-dry vac for us... and it soooo does the job, at less than the price of a Kirby and without the pushy sales pitch!

DF's Mum has one, and we take turns at borrowing it I have an old Electrolux which I love, my ex had a Dyson which was the BEST (we had 2 dogs and a cat and it was amazing what it picked up - but had to empty the barrel sooooooooooo often!!). I would never let them in either, just don't have the time or patience, and DF would probably tell them no, somewhat ermmmm..... obviously you could say! But we don't mind borrowing his mums!

In my previous life (o.k, prior to being a Mum) I was a Regional Account Manager for over 6 years for a very well known brand of vacuum cleaner and there is no way you need to spend that much money for a decent vac
