Topic: Trade Me disappointment Posted: 19 August 2009 at 2:47pm |
I am so gutted.
DH and I purchased some second hand carpet off Trade Me hoping to re-carpet our three bedrooms (currently three different, 1970s styles!).
I know it's a case of 'buyer beware' - but the stuff we got seemed so good. Pictures and comments all stacked up.
DH collected and said they were really lovely. We were stoked! Then today when we roll it out...not so good! The three peices we had hoped to use were worn, had mildew around the edges and even worse - one of the peices is entirely different carpet (close in colour, but not the same!)
I nearly cried! One of the bedrooms is going to be the baby's room....
I've written to the people whom we purchased off, but I'm not naive to think that they 'have' to give us our money back. It was my stupid fault. I should have checked it out....
So basically now I feel stupid and poor. We can't afford to lose $250.00 at the moment (like we ever could!)
So, really just a tale for you all to remind you...'caveat emptor' (and to cross your fingers that perhaps, just maybe, they take pity on us and give us our money back!)

Oh no! I think that you should send them an email and also contact TM telling them that what you brought did not resemble the pictures on TM, that sucks!

Bummer that you could not see it first.
We bought our carpet of TM, we new there was a couple of marks but we got it steam cleaned once laid & it was just to get up through the winter before we re did the floor, as we lived in the country & carpet & kids don't go together.

I would be contacting them and contacting trademe - the item was not as described, unless they clearly stated it had mildew all over it (which I'm sure you wouldn't have bought it if it did).
Also to claim its all the same, and to have 1 piece completely different to the others is just plain misleading
Don't know if you'll get your money back, but it's worth a shot and at least you can place negative feedback that might make them have a bit of a conscience.
Oh and slightly OT but are there only actually a few people in this world that think to market their items as they actually are? We've had 1 broken cell phone charger, a scratched up music box, a wrongly-sized top and a mould-covered pram in the last 6 months. I would feel way too guilty to sell something like that to someone!

Did you pick up? Do you have the trader's address? Let them know that you are lodging a claim with the Disputes Tribunal. Costs $30 but you'll easily win.

Well, they've written back and offered us half ourt money back. Better than nothing,
I don't want to go all out, cos it was sort of my fault for not going to look. You can't trust photos and descriptions.
We'll try and sell the rest and if we get more than the half we had to pay I'll give them back some $.
I'm glad they're being reasonable. Personally I would have liked all the $ back, but half is better than none.
Needless to say I'll not be making this mistake again.

I bought my 6 bridesmaids dresses off TM in June last year for my wedding in Jan this year. Between Xmas and NY she told me she couldnt get the green I wanted.. I had 2 weeks (1 in welly, 1 in the coromandle where we were getting married) to find 6 BM dresses that had the right sizes.... Ended up going with ezybuy dresses (half from wellington, half from auckland) which we got 8 cos I had to guess the sizes.. Im still waiting on the 950$ for the origional dresses i "bought" and never got.. never mind the other 600$ I spent on the ezy buy ones!!
I say you deserve any money you make off the carpet.... it is yours after all!!

Emmi that totally sucks, you paid for something that you did not get & you did not get your money back & thats big bucks.
surfergirl I think you are lucky getting half of your money back & still get all the carpet. Not many traders will do that. I know you are disappointed, but it is TM, & not brand new.
Now with saying that I would not give them any money back if you make any money on it. They did not give you a full refund & you used petrol & time in picking it up. I would use the refund to do the baby's room.
Think a lot of us have been stung by descriptions, photos & expectations. Now I ask questions even the stupid ones.

Totally keep any profit you make and think of it as 'stress' money. That sucks that it wasn't what you thought it would be as it's so exciting getting stuff organised for your baby room so I can imagine how disappointing that would be when you get screwed over. Make sure you place some negative feedback - after you get your money back.

however Jazzy it is stipulated that the seller is at fault and you can ask for a refund if the goods were not acurately described etc I read their rules awhile ago. That is also why i recommend using safe trader for the hefty trades. |
Oh & we all know that not everyone sticks to the rules don't we. I guess we would have to read the auction to see just how it was worded.
I bet TM cover there ass & would probably not do much about it.
When it comes to buying second hand items that can not be viewed you take a chance of not getting totally what you want & if it was perfect they would not be redoing it, I know I bought carpet off TM. We had heaps left over that we could not used, I did not view first or ask enough questions.
I saw someone selling cats balls on TM, (& not toys) & someone bid on them, and yet they wont allow HPT. What's with that.
Awhile ago I saw on the news people were getting scammed over ph's & computers. Paying for them & not getting them.
I love TM & getting a bargain, but it is not a shop you don't have the same safety back up.

My goodness not very good TM experiences at all.
I hope all the problems are now cleared up and money returned etc.
I am always a bit weary of TM but still buy stuff from there.
