Topic: Grrr at pharmacist - pamol overdose Posted: 29 December 2007 at 8:42am |
Ashleigh has had a high temp for the last 2 days. I used the last of my prescription paracetamol yest so went to the chemist to buy some more pamol. I've never bought it before, only used prescription stuff but somewhere in the dark recesses of my brain I remembered something about there being different strengths of it. Anyway I took the bottle up and asked the pharmacist himself if the one I had was the same as prescription stuff and he said it was I even questioned him as it said on the back of the box that 1-5 yrs dose is 2.5ml-5ml and going by Ashleigh's weight she has 6ml of the other stuff. He said to go by weight. So came home, gave her 6 ml plus another 6 ml at 4.45am when she woke feeling like an oven. Have just looked at it again and decided to compare it with the script stuff and it is more than double the strength
So she seems fine, playing like normal etc and her temp has gone for now so do I need to be worried that it has caused any harm?

I think cos it was only 2 doses she will be fine. It would be more of a problem if it was over a few days. If she seems happy enough I wouldnt be too worried. But grrr at the pharmacist... Lucky you had some idea and checked it cos most people probably would have no idea. Hope Ashleigh is feeling better soon.

She will be fine. Aimee said only 2doses wouldnt hurt oppose to a few days worht.
I have a feeling the pharmacist didnt listen to you propery or explain it enough. You can get both single or double strength on script depending on what you ask for or what they decide to give so he was technically right but should have checked what you had been given previously (providing you had got it there).
Great that you double checked as many wouldnt

when i double dosed my Jayde the doc told me not to worry about it but i had to take the double dose as being 2 of her 4 doses in 24 hours so i guess if you have done her twice then she shouldnt have anymore for that 24 hour period. I would probably ring health line to check. She can also have neurofen for kids on top of pamol.

Cool thanks guys. Kels, I think you are right as he kept going on about the flavour of it etc being the same. I didn't realise you could get the double strength on script! Her temp is still normal so hopefully it stays that way and I won't need to give her any more

I did the same thing to Benjy when we were in Australia. I didn't realise that there were 2 different strengths and freaked out when I realised I'd doubled his dose.
Hope Ashleigh is on the mend now!
