Topic: Help from Any Brainy person needed! Posted: 02 April 2008 at 7:27pm |
I am confused and having rather large heart palpitations at a possible bill......
My hubbys income shows "X" gross income on his payslip.....So thats what I based our estimate on for the Working for Families thing....
HOWEVER....there is also another part "Z" which he tells me is not part of "x" called NON TAXABLE ALLOWANCES and is quite a large amount................
Is that supposed to have been included in the updates i gave IRD through the year?????

Non taxable allowance should be part of his gross income though.
They are just not taxed.
So the gross amount is all his earnings before tax, then there should be a break down of the non taxable allowance and his taxable income. His taxable income will be taxed and the amount payed shown and then his net income will be the taxed part of his income plus the non taxable allowances.
I hope that makes some sense to you.

I think I understand.....
BASICALLY................As a lamen..... when I get the letter from IRD saying he has earnt XYZ.....I should just check off the payslip where it says YTD GROSS TAXABLE INCOME and make sure that is right????Then tick and send off!!! LOL...
We dont have any other income other than a bit of ACCOM Supplement which I am pretty sure doesnt count...from what I can remember......

His gross taxable income will be different to his gross income though if he has non taxable allowances. I have never had to fill these forms out so am not sure exactly what thay are looking for.
Probably best to give them a ring and find out for sure, whenever I have spoken to IRD they have been very helpful

My understanding of it from one brief look before finding out we don't qualify for anything is that the gross income is income from all sources. So anything coming in is counted whether it is taxable or not, whether wages or rent or money from stocks etc, anything you get in is counted as income.
But before you panic (as I could quite easily be wrong) I would phone them up and talk to them.

Yes well thats was my understanding too....but Mark and My Grandfather thought because he was paying for his accom meals tools etc ..that he was just being "reimbursed" for this so not counted....
**big sigh**
Hate ringing them....Maybe just wait til the do all the calculations and send out the paperwork!!!! (other words bury my head in the sand and forget it all for now) LOL

OK from another perspective...
DH is in the army, they get their normal salary (taxable income) and also whenever they travel in NZ or on deployments all extra pay is non-taxable income. We have never had to declare it as it is NON-TAXABLE so therefore for some reason doesn't come into it. It's kind of like fringe benefits, I think its something up to a certain percentage of your pay that your allowed? But then again I'm not sure, I would check it out though because just from our experience I would say you may not have to worry about it.

I just had a brainy thought and am supposed to have put this away but when I went onto the IRD Website AGAIN LOL ..the work it out and see what entitlement it..... where it says to put in your income..inc income from BLAH BLAH BLAH..NON TAXABLE INCOME is not one of the things listed there...
So now got my hopes up again!!! LOL
I also worked out his PAYE he has paid on his income using one of their calculators and he appears to have overpaid that so maybe if we do get a huge bill after all....it might not be toooooooooooooo UNBEARABLE LOL!!

Hi Kelpa,
A non-taxable allowance is not part of gross earnings.
If that helps?

When I worked nightshift a few years ago we got a nontaxed benefit and that was not included in our gross taxable income.
I don't think you need to worry about it being included as his taxable income that WFF's is worked out on. I know DH gets a field allowance when ever they are out in the field and that is a non tax benefit.
Also your accom is nt included in your family income.

My DH used to have income like yours Kelpa - Government agency! I just put the top amount and ignored the non-taxable payments, almost treated them as though they were disbursements. Seemed to work out right with our IRD statement.
btw If you do ever get a big bill from IRD you do have until Feb of the following year to pay it - so basically a full 6 mos.
