Topic: Gross - Weevils! Posted: 10 April 2007 at 8:07am |
Yuck, yuck, yuck.....this morning I was eating my cereal and had got to the very bottom of the bowl when I found a weevil floating in my milk!!
GROSS!
So - we obviously have weevils in our pantry. Does anyone know the best way to get rid of them? I have never had them before - so have no idea!!

Apparently weevils come home with the groceries, they like rice, pasta and flour, yuck! I store these things in a air tight plastic container and try and use within 3 months. To get rid of them I think you have to throw stuff away, but apparently cooking will remove any risk.

we have a bit of a weevil prob at the moment also, must be the time of the year for them. All i can suggest is, (and its a huge job) pull everything out of your pantry and give it a good clean, then make sure every bag and box of dry stuff, (cereal, flour, ect) is sealed, rolled up and clipped with a peg is good. Any little eggs and stuff that are left will still hatch, and you have to get rid of them, but if they cant find any where to lay eggs, or there little cocoon thingys they will just dissapear.
wow, i seem to know a bit about weevils, lol, but as i say i had a bit of a major problem and this seemed to sort it.

I guess I knew I probably needed to empty out the pantry and give it a good clean out...its just such a big job!!!!
I do try to keep things in containers most of the time, but might have to go and get some more!
(might see if I can convince my mum to come over and 'help' me do the pantry!!)

to get rid of them you need to chuck out everything that is open. to know if there is weevels in a brand new packet of stuff, when you open it there will be like little cobwebs on the side of the packet.

We have had them in the past, We got rid off them by cleaning out the pantry totally. Then throwing away all opened packets. Was a mission but was only needed once!

I would seriously invest in some plastic containers (ie Tupperware or similar) to keep your stuff in. Make sure it's airtight and that should be fine!

Eeww poor you!
Briscoes has a sale on, you should head down there and get a whole heap of clickclack containers or the like - not too expensive but they are sturdy and will last.
Happy pantry cleaning..

Yeah I had them once, defintely had to throw everything out and start again - you will be able to keep them away - and then you will realise that you keep forgetting to use the airtight containers (too much trouble) and then when you least expect it the weevils will be back!!
