Topic: Digital Cameras Posted: 14 April 2008 at 8:01am |
My digital camera got stolen last week, so now i have to get a new one.
Any recommendations? It doesnt have to be brand new, im happy with 6mp, but it has to take videos with sound too.
Someone was talking about a camera ages ago on here, had something to do with a highchair photo with their daugter and it was septia colour with red bits i think.. i went back over the years posts and couldnt find anything.. I think it was a cannon.
So what camera do you have?

I have a pentax one, will get model later, but its the waterproof one, which is great for kiddie pics, also takes video with sound, and has a setting for underwater video with sound. I think it is an awesome camera,

We've got a Panasonic Lumix. It takes video with sound, and they are quite good quality videos too. I have no idea of the fancy bits though. I just point and shoot and it does the rest for me.
There is a smaller version that runs on rechargeable batteries.
I've heard that the Sony Cybershots are very good. Do you have a Parallel Importer down there? You can sometimes pick the cameras up cheaper there than at a retail shop.

Remember that anything over 5mps is pretty much a waste of money - UNLESS you're gonna be blowing the pictures up larger than A4 size.
I'd suggest a visit to one of the electrical retailers to see what they have on special. Dont look for digital zoom - always look for optical (digital is crapola) Oh Oh and stay away from that silly Smith City place. I went in there yesterday and omg they are so overpriced! Harvey norman had a camera sale on not long ago, and you could get a flash one for under $300 which was excellent. Have a good shop around!

DH reckons that for a good quality camera you should go for a brand that specialises in them like Canon. We both have canon cameras and they are both really great. Mine only cost $300 and it takes really nice photos and video.
Sony is a PITA because you have to use sony everything with it. Like sony memory cards.

Yeah i just read that, so im going to lag on that one. I just liked that it had 4gb built in and it has a smile shutter, so as soon as the person smiles it tkes the photo.. off to investigate canon ones

Hi it was me who was going on about the Canon with the highchair photo (will try find the post for you)
I ended up buying a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18. But I am getting into photgraphy so its got 18 optical zoom.
We also have a normal Panasonic lumix FX11(?) which in the shops I think its around the $400 mark. 7 mp. It takes really good pictures and also has the video with sound.
will put some links on later as i hve to head out right now.

I've got an Olympus, like you I had THE perfect camera and then some B*tch broke into my house and stole it, the insurance replaced it but coz it had been bought overseas couldn't get the exact same model and I don't like this one quite as much, but it is pretty good.
One thing I would recommend is a rechargeable battery, it's saved me a fortune in batteries. Mine is a 7MP too which is a bit excessive I guess, but then I have had some of the pics I've taken blown up and block mounted for the girls' walls, so it's nice to have that option.

My husband and I only like the Canon SLR's as they take awesome shots both inside and out and they have got a stabiliser in it and so quick to take a shot of your kids to catch that special moment like we have. He will never buy anything under 8MP as it is a waste of money. I did have a Canon S3IS that was a 12 optical zoom and great for outdoors but it was lousy in the places like the muesum as it had too much noise in the photo so I complained about it and ended up getting the 300D and have been happy since.

We have/had a Canon S1 IS (other versions of this one have the colour selection option that you're talking about) and I loved it but it's just this week spat the dummy!!!! So we're off to buy a new one - probably an SLR. I do love Canon cameras, although I did have a play with Mum's S3 IS like kiwigals, and I don't think it took as good photos as our S1 does. I agree with kiwigal - the photos had far too much noise!
Kiwigal, does the 300D have stabilising? I was told by a guy at Harvey Norman that the Canon 400D doesn't have a stabiliser and to wait for the 450D which is due out this month or next, I can't remember. Is he just conning us into spending more money?! I've started doing some research into digital SLR's, and was almost set on a Nikon D40 but have read that that doesn't have auto focus so now we're unsure. Will probably go with Canon if the 400D does in fact have IS.
ETA: the Nikon is only 6 point something mega pixels, but they only matter if you plan on doing big poster sized enlargements. In that case, the bigger, the better!

I did look into an slr but unless you are willing to pay over $1500 for a camera you are better getting a point and shoot type - which for normal every day photgraphy (and a little experienting) it is great for. Thats why i got a Panasonic Lumix FZ18 - great optical zoom and lots of features on it.
Note: I went to get the Canon 400d and even though was a great camera, it cost around $1300 for the camera - then another $300 if you get the twin lens kit with it. and then (and this is what changed my mind) you have to buy a seperate flash (as it doesn't come with one) and for a good one thats at least another $500. - also a memory card, a bag etc.... So unless you are looking at selling your photos or have that type of money to spend it gets rather expensive...although one day I would love to get an SLR I am going to 'perfect' my photography first
ETA: I did 'alot' of thinking about the subject of what camera to get. Am happy with my choice.

I'd personally ALWAYS stick with Canon! I bought mine in 2006 when I was preggy with Bub, Grandparents kindly gave us the money as a pre-baby present ...and its still going strong and takes wicked photos!
Its the Canon Power Shot A540 ..at the time I purchased it Digi Cams seemed to be a lot more expensive. I paid something like $450-$500 for it and got the free camera bag and SD memory card package with it! Best money I've ever spent, taken well over 100 videos and 3000+ photos of bub already LOL
It's 6MP and 4x optical zoom, with video & sound and lots of other wicked features. Infact I think the next model up which has same features but more Megapixels is actually $250 or something like that atm! Everyone above me has mentioned that Megapixels don't really matter UNLESS you are planning on blowing the photos up are right in saying so BUT I've been looking at digi cams and they are really well priced for a 7-8MP one at the moment, reputable brands too! And hey the blowing up a photo to bigger size feature may come in handy, I've blown up a lot of the photos I've taken and they come out FAR better than the professional jobs ...at least he's smiling in them!
Comes down to personal choice really, but best advice I can give is to definitely shop around first because there are some really good bargains out there atm!

Ann, that's why I was swayed towards the Nikon. It's under a grand ($875 at Harvey Normans currently), has a built in flash and from what I've read, the kit lens is really, really good (as opposed to the Canon which the kit lens it comes with isn't that great). Still has an auto settings feature so it can still be a point and shoot. Agreed though that it all can get pricey very quickly! In saying that, if you love doing it, why not?!
Good luck with your choice, Kylahsmum and let us know what you end up getting! Maybe make a list of features that you really, really want (eg, 8MP, video recording, etc) and go from there. Keep an eye out for package deals and then go and do some research on those brands. There are plenty of digital camera review websites out there, usually with sample shots as well.

baalamb i agree with you. i have heard the Nikon was a good camera to get (not sure which one but an SLR) just for me the one we got was good - can still do manual setting etc... as close to a slr withough being one.
Oh another thing to note is that most places will discount what amount is on display if you are buying extras like Memory card (you will need one 2 gb or more is standard now) and bag etc.... I got a great deal for what i got.

Sorry I made a mistake should have looked at the camera first it is the 400D with 17-85 lens built in stabilser we paid about $1600 for it but well worth it. Probably have come down in price a bit as I have had mine for a few months.

Oh yeah, that makes sense, the stabiliser being in the lens itself. Like the Nikon, you can only use autofocus if the lens that you're using has an autofocus motor in it. Any other lens and you'd use manual focus.
I don't think the price has dropped much at all! But I can imagine it's worth the money. I can't wait to get a new camera!!!
Ann - Interesting that you can usually barter for a bit of a discount. I was actually going to post a thread about how much you can ask the salesperson to discount, without being too rude!!!
