I had been putting off writing this post as i really did not think it fitted really anywhere. however, have had a ring from the midwife this afternoon and have been booked in for a D&C early tomorrow morning. I am now freaking out at the finality of it all but need to get on and keep going.   anyone that has had one can you tell me anything you feelwould be helpful. ihaven't even had a general anaesthetic before or anything stonger than panadol. so it is all unknown, and mega freaky. if you don't feel you can post on here, feel free to pm me.

any help would be great thanks ladies.

Are you having a general for it?? I haven't had one before but have been under a general a few times and have been fine coming out. However not everyone is like that. Let them know that you haven't had one before and that you want Mike (if he will be there) to be beside you for when you wake or as soon as he can be beside you. Who is doing it?? You can PM me if you like to tell me.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

That sucks! When I had my last one they did it within hours (but then I was already bleeding so that may have upped the urgency).

I've already told you in long, sordid (and probably quite boring) detail about mine so I won't get into it again here, but am sending you some more hugs, we are all thinking of you.

I found going back to work was both the best thing for me and the worst at the same time. It was great to be able to focus on something, it helped take my mind off things, but on the other hand the nature of my job means I am surrounded by pregnancies and babies (I'm guessing yours is a lot the same) which was agony.

I haven't had a D&C but I have had a termination and was the first time i'd been under general. To be honest i didn't feel a thing, counted down and woke up a bit later with a wad of pad between my legs at that was it. It was like having a very heavy period for 2-3 days afterwards. I was on my own and had to stay with a friend for the first 24 hours for observation. The OP was over and done in the same day. Its very routine for the hospital.

Oh and www.miscarriage.org.nzhas some general info on d and c's, and the EBB Miscarriage Support board is quite good too, if you post your question over there you should be able to get a few different experiences.

Teehee Teresa, we must have posted at the same time

And yep, it is usually just day surgery and pretty routine (which almost makes it harder to deal with, the whole matter-of-factness of it). I didn't bleed much at all after mine, only one day of full on bleeding then a few days of spotting.

Janine, so sorry for your loss, and the delay for the D&C can't be making things any easier.

When I went under general anaesthetic, the thing I wasn't warned about was waking up! I shook and shook and shook, and there was no one in the room to tell me it was ok, just a normal reaction to waking. I also felt very nauseous for a few hours afterwards - make sure you lie down and sleep if possible. Funny how sleeping can be the recovery for waking up...

My cousin had 1 a couple of weeks ago. It was day surgery and she out of action for the following day due to heavy bleeding. But physically recovered pretty quickly
But I am sorry I don't know much else.

I can though send a big your way. Take care

Hey Janine, I hope it is ok for you. I didn't have a D&C with my miscarriage. My 'thing' with needles made it easier for me to do it naturally. Thinking of you tho.

I had a termination, which is a bit different emotionally, but possibly similar physically... I was just under local. The bleeding afterward was similar to post-birth... went on for ages.

The actual procedure wasn't too bad, I talked the whole way through it... I guess it was all the drugs they gave me. Maybe you could ask for something like that? Apparently the drugs are to "relax muscles" but really I guess it's to relax your mind. Anyway... as much as it sounds a bit of a cop out, it helped.

And yeah, emotionally I can't compare. I guess I felt like I had lost a baby, but I tried to distance myself from it as much as possible, which is probably the opposite of what a miscarriage is like.

Terribly sorry if this is the wrong take on such a sensitive topic. I know I shouldn't really be comparing the two but hopefully you 'know' me well enough that I am trying to tell this in support of you.

Ah, am I digging even more of a hole???

I had a D&C last year under very similar circumstances Janine. I was terrified, but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had thought it would be. They will give you a small pill an hour or so before the surgery to get everything opening up and will give you gas before they put you under the general. I had the guys in the operating room entertaining me while they were putting me under as well which was quite funny at the time, they did help put me at ease.
When I woke up I felt ok, just a bit crampy like a period pain, and bled for about 3 days afterwards. Nothing too heavy or painful though.
I found the weirdest/and best thing about the general was the fact that one second you are being put under and the next second you are awake!
Don't worry chick, it isn't too horrible, and is over quick - which is what I was trying to say in book form
Big hugs Everything will be fine.

The worst thing I remember about my last d and c is nothing to do with the procedure itself - I remember coming around from the anaesthetic and feeling all woozy and nauseous and when I opened my eyes all I could see were Christmas decorations (it was January) and they were all fuzzy and blurry and made me throw up. And I remember my first cohesive thought post-anaesthetic was "how totally inappropriate those decorations are", even tho I'm sure they were supposed to brighten the place up it was like a personal insult that anyone could be celebrating while I went thru this horrible experience.

Sorry, totally OT and not very helpful, just rambling

Awwwww ..big hugs ...you poor girl. I cant begin to understand how you must be feeling. All I know is it must be awful waiting around.

I had a termination when Paige was 2 and I had a local for that. Didnt feel a thing really but machine makes a strange noise. They gave me lots of relax pills before and the whole thing was over pretty quick. Had lots of gas. Heavy period afterwards.

I did not really feel anything emotionally..bit devoid really but suffered a wee bit of depression 8 months later - (which can happen for some reason).

XXXXXX Everything will be okay

I don't know if this is at all relevant... but myself and another girl who had a late miscarriage at 16 weeks were talking about feeling ghost pregnancies in the months following a loss. All apparently completely normal... but I felt like I was losing the plot.

I remember just the waiting, it was horrible waiting for them to take me down to take away my babies. I remember telling them not to forget there were two in there (as if they would) I was surprised when i woke up that my lips were sore, they put a tube down your throat, i hadnt really thought about that side of it. they also gave me a pill before hand to start things off, kind of cramping etc... it was the first time i had any sort of op too and i was really scared. I knew i wanted a D&C rather than go naturally cos i had no bleeding so it could have taken a while but the thought of actually having an op and going into hospital scared the sh*t out of me. It all wasnt as bad as I expected. When they came to get me I just lay on the bed, shut my eyes and didnt open them till I woke up. Oh and I hate being tied down or anything and they do tie your arms down so you dont wave them around but just tell them if your not happy with that and they will do it once your under. When you get into the op theatre they put you under really quickly, theres no mucking round which is good.
Crickey thats a bit of a ramble sorry, just typing as i remember things but I think you get the general idea.
All the best
