Topic: So embarrassing Posted: 31 October 2007 at 2:15pm |
On monday I drove home from Christchurch with my petrol light on, naughty I know but I really couldn't be bothered to stop and get petrol.
So today I am running late already, jump in the car see the petrol light think damn it maybe I can get where I'm going without filling up, on board computer says I have 25km left (but I don't trust that thing, it told me I had 0km left when I had a quarter of a tank before).
So I get to the end of my road and the car dies, it restarted so I thought you know what i best go get some petrol first, I make it to the end of the next road and it dies again on the roundabout, luckily the shell garage is next to the roundabout, so I have to get out and start trying to push it which is practically impossible and is even harder to try and steer cos the power steering has gone cos the engine is dead, plus it is about a 1000 degrees down here today. Luckily a couple of guys came across from the petrol station and helped me.......... so embarrassing, I haven't run out of petrol since I had my first car which had a broken petrol guage, will definately not be too lazy to stop next time.

haha thats so funny...sorry. but i presume you were on williams st (thats the main road aye?)and can just picture you pushing your car along there. Im paranoid that will happen to me I panick and fill up as soon as the tank is almost empty before the light even comes on. Hey what road do you live on out there? kind of sounds like directions from my dads house

I'm on Vickery. It wasn't funny at the time, but is pretty funny now. I'm sure DH will get a good laugh out of it when he gets home as well, he was telling me off for driving around with the petrol light.

hehehe!
Brings back memories of coasting into a petrol station on our way to Queenstown many moons ago!
We'd spend the previous hour gliding down hills to preserve the little bit of petrol we had left.

Nice that some people helped you...the one and only time my car died on me, I was on my way to uni and the car died RIGHT at the lights (while they were green) at a main intersection. Got out of the car and started to push and steer the car off the road, and do you think anyone would stop and help me ! Honestly, I was lucky the car was old and pretty light, but I must have been a sight pushing my own car!!

LOL! My DH got out at the lights recently near our place (I was driving) to help push some poor girl's car to the petrol station across the road. The 2nd guy in the Higgins truck behind her also helped. She must have been hugely embarrassed!
Since I've had more than one kid, I've made an effort to try to fill up at 1/2 full. That way if a baby is crying and we need to get home, we can, and I'll do it next time. (Tricks of the trade )

Shaaaaaaame! I shouldn't laugh tho coz I have come close so many times! And it just feels so *wrong* running out of gas when you have money to pay for it!

It is actually quite funny now. When I told DH he said well there is a can of petrol in the garage for the lawnmower why didn't you use that. Thing is I thought I had enough to get to the petrol station, is so close to our house it makes it even funnier and more embarassing.
I use to be really good at filling up, I would go every friday morning on the way to work and treat myself to a coffee for the drive in at the same time, but now I don't work and the use of the car is a bit random I don't have that routine and normally if i'm going somewhere I'm already running late so don't have time and when I'm on my home I'm normally knackered and can't be bothered to stop. (i will be bothered to stop next time though lol)

Well today I didn't run out petrol, but I must have not shut one of the doors properly or something cos i had a totally dead battery this morning. I am not having a good car week. My friend came all the way out from chch to jump start me which was nice, but we both ended up being late to coffee group.
Plus we jumped the car, she left and then I got half way up the driveway and it died again so she had to come back and we had to jump it again . Then I drove along doing some dodgy left foot braking so that I could keep the gas on and brake/stop at the same time.

Haha the lawnmower petrol! I don't think I would have thought of that either
As for the dodgy breaking, what about neutral plus gas, and the handbrake? Or if it's an auto, in park and handbrake with a bit of gas? Wouldn't that have been better?

I put it in park at the lights, but when slowing down had to try not to let the revs drop too much so had no choice but to brake and accelerate at the same time. Only for a little bit and then it was fine.
