What do y'all think about China?

It's been in the news a lot lately with the Free Trade agreement and the upcoming Olympics, and there has been a lot of controversy.

I don't know much about the FTA, but I do have to question the ethics of a country like China being allowed to host the Olympics when they have been committing human rights atrocities for years in Tibet, when a huge percentage of their population live below the poverty line, and when they are still subscribing to a communist regime.

Anyone else got thoughts?

I don't know anything about the FTA either. But as for the olympics, I don't see why they should be allowed to hold it either because of their way of "governing" but not just that the whole country is a serious health risk because of the smog and crap so why would you want to hold such a huge international event in sport with the athletes breathing that in?!

I think too that there is a risk of whole sections of the population being forced out of the main centre for the duration coz they don't fit the "image" the Chinese govt is trying to pull off.

I'd personally like to see boycots of the olympics as I dont agree with China's stand on Tibet. but that is MUHO (My uninformed humble opinon ) as for the FTA....who does know anything aboutit? and is it best to be the first country? Do others know something we dont?

I agree Maya, there is real issues with have an agreement with a coutry that has an 'interesting' human rights record. It is a little rich from our govt, when we put sanctions in place against Fiji becuase of the coup yet we will happily enter a free trade agreement with a coutry that seems to be even worse.
In terms of the Olympics, I think that now that it is happening we should support our athletes, since they have all worked so hard to get there, it is not their fault that it is taking place in China. At the same time I think it could actually help the Chinese people becuase it will force their government to be more open, since they are on show for the world. But it is an issue that they will just move the people who won't 'fit' the image. I also feel sorry for the athlets having to compete in the smog.
Sorry this is so long, just my opinion. A tricky issue

I never liked China's policy on HR. I think they are strange country and the whole Tibet thing has been brewing for a long time now and ppl just turn a blind eye on it!! Mr Bush does not bother to intervine as China does not have OIL may be then Bush would have jumpped up and down.

It is also pathetic that our Govt is to scared to say any thing because of the FTA. And yet is quick to jump on Fiji's domestic issues!! What rubbish!! Guess who I am not voting this time around.

As for Olympics...well I feel baad for all the ppl going there to compete...they will do some serious damage to their lungs after they are finished!!

Even though many people living in China will be affected negatively by the Olympics....it will bring huge amounts of money into the economy. I still think however that China should have never been allowed to host the olympics. I am looking forward to watching them on TV though

I don't think they should be allowed the olympics more for the health of the athletes I can't see any records been broken due to the air.

As for HR its just wrong.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Thats what prompted me to start this thread BS - it has to be one of the most controversial venues in the history of the Games.
