Topic: Tooth Ache caused by meds? Posted: 09 August 2008 at 3:11pm |
As most of you may know I'm 'recovering' from my tonsillectomy ...I've been taking a cocktail of medications given to me to help with pain and prevent infection etc etc.
Now on top of having an incredibly sore throat & barely being able to eat anything now I have chronic tooth pain/ache and can't bite ...I basically have lock jaw and can barely talk. According to my parents I sound like that lady on the brain injury ad or that guy from the throat cancer/smoking ad ....could this be caused by my medication or is it part of the healing from a tonsillectomy?
If it doesn't get better by Monday I'll ring my Dr. I can still take my meds with just yoghurt (needs to be with food so that can suffice) ....but shoot this is worse than childbirth!!!!!!!!!

Also while I'm here I am on Augmentin at the moment to prevent any infection occuring during the healing process, Lucas has had a bit of diarrhea which I suspect is some kind of reaction to him picking it up in my breastmilk - should I be concerned or just let it run its course? I've only got to take it for ten days ....

How many days post-op are u now Steph? The pain and tooth/jaw pain sounds worrying. What pain relief and dose are u on?
Most meds pass through breastmlik to some degree,....diarrhea is a very common side effect of augmentin,..as long as its not too bad and he is still eating /drinking normally, I would continue,..as the benifit to you outway the risk to him.
Hope u feel better soon!

Don't forget I had 4 fillings needing to be done (over a year ago now) so probably more ....wondering if that has anything to do with it?
Kellz I had my op on Thurs Morn 8am, so today is day 3.
I'm taking :
Augmentin Tablets 500
ONE Tablet THREE times daily with food (so 30 tablets all up over a course of ten days)
Paracetamol 4 hourly ...
Strepsils + PLUS Throat (Local anaesthetic) spray ....
AND Diclofenac Sodium Ta 50mg EC (Apo) - whatever that means lol
And those are one tab twice daily with food.

argh sh*t I think I've been taking an extra Diclofenac per day because I've been taking them the same time as the Augmentin which is three times ...
I hate taking medication, let alone more than one at once AND WHILST breastfeeding.
I'm so stupid

EC is enteric coated which just means it has a special coating and that means the tablet shouldnt be broken before u take it.
You really need to be taking the Diclofenac(Voltaren) with food, yogurt of a glass of milk is ok, but more would be better but Im sure thats impossible!
It is still early days, but it does sound like more pain than u should be in. You could always ring ( or get your parents to ring, since it sound like they wont be able to understand you) the ward u were on and check it out with them.
Also,...STOP TALKING!!!
and see a dentist asap!!!

An extra one wont kill you, but they are really nasty on your stomach and really must be with food.

Okay phew I'm not going to die then I went into panic mode for a bit.
Definitely plan on seeing the dentist once I can open my mouth without being in immense pain
Any idea whether its standard routine for them to take adenoids out with tonsils if they didn't mention it? I had problems with my ears before hand but now they are worse too (although I can hear better ....which isn't necessarily a good thing when I'm around my mother most the time haha)

You shouldnt have adnoids at your age,...they shrink away when your a kid! It is quite common to have adnoids removed same time when your a kid tho.
They would have been listed on the consent form exactly what u were having done anyway.
Your ears/ nose/throat are all so close together and linked, that when one is suffering from being chopped and poked and prodded,..they all moan in sympathy!

That certainly makes sense ...my Mum kept asking me if my adenoids were taken out too because her 'medical dictionary' said that they get taken out with tonsils ...she didn't mention that you only have them as a kid - silly woman!
Thank you for helping out Kellz - i really appreciate it!

if your a bit stuffed up with sinus stuff too this can also cause tooth ache.
