Topic: Leaking colostrum and milk supply     Posted: 07 April 2009 at 1:44pm |

Hi, I've heard that a lot of people leak colostrum while pregnant, and one lady last night replied to my topic of signs of labour coming on that she started leaking lots of colostrum on the day of labour.

I'm due anyday now and I haven't had any leakages from my breasts the entire pregnancy.

Does that mean that I will find it difficult to breast feed, that the baby might suckle when she is newly born and that nothing will come, or will the change of hormones kick things into life?
Or is there no relationship between whether you've leaked or not and how soon colostrum and milk come in after the birth?

 Thanks

Hi, some people do seem to think that if you leak lots during pregnancy then you will have lots of milk afterwards, I leaked colostrum both pregnancies and have had over supply issues both times after baby has arrived as well but plenty of women don't leak at all during pregnancy and still have tons of milk once baby arrives. Don't worry you will have colostrum and milk, your hormones will do exactly what they need to. The colostrum will be there right away for baby and you may find that if you gave your boobies a squeeze it's already there just that you aren't leaking it. Milk comes in 2-5 days later, depends on a few things, having a c/s can delay it considerably but it still comes in. I had a c/s with my first and no milk till day 5 but then tons once it arrived, with 2nd baby i had a vaginal birth and it came in on day 3.

I never leaked at all, but had great supply when my milk came in (I could express 150ml off 1 side in under 10minutes!!) Like cuppatea said, don't worry about it, your body will make sure that it has whatever is needed, when its needed.

I just wanted to say- on a funny note- I discovered last night I was leaking colostrum from one of the holes from my nipple piercing- which I took out 6 years ago!!!
Imagine how funny thats gonna look when my milk starts flowing!! lol

There's no correlation. I have also never had leakages pre-birth but have had no probs with feeding or milk coming in.

This is a good question!! i have wondered the same thing for 5 years! and never got around to asking!!!

My colostrum didnt come in until baby was born (or i just wasnt able to express it!!!??) and i had major feeding issues both times!! ..
I have another question about BF so i might go post it as not to threadjack

Cool thanks for your responses, it has put my mind at rest because I'd love to be able to BF if I'm able.

Apparently my mother was, as she puts it, 'the best milking cow on the block' so hopefully I take after her and won't have any problems. Well I hope I don't take *too* much after her, apparently her breasts were so large that hooligan idiots used to yell out car windows at her about her breasts as they drove past!! Also when she used to see any babies her breasts would start pouring out milk
