Topic: I need peoples opinions/ideas Posted: 08 June 2007 at 1:24pm |
I have a friend who is so totally frustrated with the lack of nice affordable maternity cloths in new zealand and because she is a dressmaker is looking at making all her own maternity clothes.
she would like to make and sell maternity cloths but would like to know what ppl actually want.
as in style, colours, cut, (skirts, tops, trousers) casual, formal, work etc etc
any opinions and ideas would be gratefully recieved
Thanks

It is funny that you ask this - I am starting to despair at what I am going to wear when I get bigger. I am normally a size 16 and over 6ft tall, and I am finding it hard to get maternity clothes! At the moment I am OK, becuase I can fit the L-XL items, but I don't know what to do when I have a large bump! So we need some maternity clothes for bigger/taller women!

The biggest problem I had was the length of pants. I have long legs and found trying to get clothes that had length in them was difficult so I ended up wearing 3/4's all the time, fine for summer pregnancy but as i'm plannig my next one to be a winter pregnancy I want long pants.

I would like to see better colour ranges. Black and navy is ok but when you want some colour there seems to be less choice and when you are feeling like a whale you dont want to feel worse with a colour that doesnt suit you.
I do really like the approach EGG has with their sizing. Ok, its annoying to get used to something new but it feels good to be a size 1,2,3,4 etc rather than 14, 16, etc.
Maternity togs are the one thing I really struggled with. Trousers, jeans etc were ok for me. I have short legs and have to take everything up anyway. Tops were harder but maybe that was getting used to my changing shape and I have always been top heavy and sensitive.

I had a wedding to attend to when I was 6 months pregnant and it was impossible for me to find a nice formal top/shirt! I ended up being able to fit a top in a larger size from a chain store by chance!! Pants and skirts were no problem to come across.
So I'd love to see more maternity formal wear on the market. I'd definitely buy it. It's important for a preggy lady to feel gorgeous when in a social situation like a wedding.

I would love to be able to buy a nice top that can do a full-term bump and size 12As at the same time! Over the bump pants are by far comfiest IMO and I'd like to see some dressy skirts that don't make you just look overweight.
With tops, I love things that can easily dress down with jeans or dress up with black pants for a special occasion.
And leading into breastfeeding tops is an easy extension of maternity wear

Something for younger mums too, a lot of seems to be either really 'maternity' type looking things, or they're frankly a bit too riske for a m2b to be wearing.
Ok, that made no sense. ie. I would love the latest fashions (ie. cuts, colours), but just have more material for the bump and the boobs! Oh, and the butt!
At this stage, I'll just be going up sizes, as the only nice stuff on the market (for me!) is way too expensive. I guess when you've got a captive market it's easy to do that though.
Oh, and nice going out stuff. Like a really cool floaty dress that makes you look gorgeous, not frumpy!

I am struggling to find pants for the height challenged, I'm 5ft 3 and all the maternity pants that I've tried are miles to long, and I've had to have them chopped or taken up.
I'm also struggling to find stylee looking jumpers and/or sweatshirts..

I struggle to find appropriate 'age' clothes, I like funky stuff that isnt going to make me look like a nana. I dont struggle too much with tops, but find pants really hard as I was a size 22/24 in pants to start with (with my huge childbearing hips!!)
I think generally larger sizes would be great - I think that larger size maternity stuff seems a)old Fashioned b) really expensive

my friend is about 18wks pregnant now with no2 and is struggling to find decent maternity cloths and has found a couple of patterns that turn normal clothes to maternity cloths.
once she has made up a couple of samples i will post some pictures on here and you can all give me your opinions :)

I agree with the expensiveness of maternity clothes, it's outrageous. I think pants and skirts in larger maternity sizes would be great. I was also a 16/18 pre pregnancy and my thighs just wouldn't fit into XL maternity pants and the waist was only just big enough with a bit of room for a belly - not a good sign when you're only 12 weeks in!!
I also found tops in XL to be too fitting - like X-rated! Way to bad for wearing to work.
I ended up getting stuff from Kmart in normal size 22/24 and putting belt loops on them and my "maternity" tops are huge. But at least I'm comfy in them. I hate to think what I will do if a formal occassion comes up in the next little while
I would definitely love maternity clothes in the softer or stretchier fabrics.

I agree - Maternity clothes are so expensive, I ended up only buying 1 pair of Mat pants - from pumpkin patch, which cost the earth but I got heaps of use out of so didn't mind too much. I loved them - they were wide leg, with a wide soft comfy waistband, and had a drawstring to tie up underneath my bump. I like the idea of wider leg pants - as they hide your (or my) expanding Butt and thighs.
Oh and I love Eggs idea for sizing, so much nicer than the other sizing!

Hi
I'm 34 weeks pregnant, and a size 24 apple normally so have found it difficult to find any maternity clothes. Because I am a lovely larger lady anyway I am pretty much wearing clothes that I've brought with me from overseas.
This is what I like to wear, and would appreciate having more of:
I find cotton/elastane tops more comfortable to wear than cotton or cotton/viscous mixes. Cotton/elastane gives you stretch (without losing it's shape unlike some brands of cotton, and it's not hot like a cotton/viscous mix is). Only problem is that it needs to be washed on delicate, dried out of the sun and ironed (if wanted) on the inside of the material.
My favourite tops are empire line tops in the above material. They look quite flattering, with a vertical gather in the middle of the bust with a string that goes around the neck. This means on the days that you want to look sexy, you can scrunch the material at the bottom of the vertical gather to show off cleavage, and for those days when you want more cover, spread the material and tie the neck strings a bit higher. What also looks nice in a top like this is a v-shape at the front at the bottom of the top (it looks great and gives you the added practicality of having more room to grow) kinda like a pleat.
I am winging my pregnancy on wide banded all the way around pumpkin patch jeans, an XL fits a size 24 (was a big surprise for me).
I have found it helpful to buy A line skirts in a heavier material for winter one size bigger than I already am (when i find them!) and using little side suspenders that connect the sides of the skirts to the sides of your bra. You almost get a bell like shape, plus it sits lower on your tummy (the side suspenders hold the skirt up) giving a bit more room to grow.
I found three quarter length drawstring pants fantastic for summer, plus you have the added advantage of being able to wear them in winter with knee high boots.
Shrugs are good for emphasising va-va voom bosoms, and if you can get the ones that look a bit like a long waistcoat but with an empire line drawstring under the bust, then so much the better.
Although what to wear in a breastfeeding top, now that has me more than a little perplexed...

I had to get my mum to send me over some stuff from the UK cause there wasnt much here.
I would say that i would want nice clothes, things that id wear even if i wasnt pregnant. I dont want to have to change my clothing style cause im pregnant!
Nice tops for going out as i go to alot of 21sts and have weddings coming up etc and i dont have things that fit that doesnt look too casual. I must say i have only seen one nice skirt, not that i have really been looking cause my mum has sent all the clothes i wear now to me. hehe.
I like long tops. But they are pretty easy to find now days i have a stiped singlet i ALWAYS wear that i got from Jayjays before i was pregnant. I mean i am still growing, but im pretty sure this top will last throughout the whole pregnancy as its quite long.
