I think my boss just called me a slapper – in a roundabout way.

I have a pretty outgoing personality – and in the area that I sit in, there are 5 other women, so we talk about all sorts of things….including childbirth, pregnancy, and occasionally sex (but not in a dirty way!!). We are all different ages and cultures, but get along fine.

So today we are talking about something and my boss sits down (she isn’t here a lot, as she is mainly in meetings)….and we were telling stories about people we had interviewed over the years….I said something like “Its always embarrassing when you interview someone and realise that you dated them in your past…” and her response was “Well we expect that from you!”. NOW JUST WAIT ONE MINUTE….. I have been with my husband for 10 years (we got together when I was 21)…so its not like I have had a lifetime of dating / sleeping around with people (and besides even if I had – I still think the comment was unfair).

Although I laughed it off, I am deeply offended that she has formed an opinion on me based on that…and as she put it “you are always talking about things like that”….well NO I am not always talking about things like that….but clearly the fact that I talk openly with people about all sorts of things has offended her. (I know she gets her knickers in a knot when we all talk about breastfeeding, which I just find funny!!!)

She then had the nerve to ask me to do her a ‘personal’ not work related favour whilst she was at a meeting….So right now am feeling a bit peeved.

Am maybe over-reacting, could blame the hormones, but I just think she has been really rude to me!

Uh, no. She was out of line! You're a better person than me ... admittedly I'm a redhead, so prone to sparking, but I'd have had her tongue on a plate. And, like you said, you've been with your husband 10 years!

The guys I work with give me a hard time about everything under the sun, but never once has there been a joke even remotely linked to something that's not likely - it's just not funny otherwise. As in, they rib me about my temper, though they've barely seen the surface of it, because I have red hair. So, being a redhead, it's conceivable I'd have a temper. Do you get what I mean?

Stupid woman!

It sounds like she's just very reserved ("English" ) and finds your way of chatting foreign. I actually wouldn't take it too personally. Are you going to be working for her after baby is born?

She possibly has absolutely no idea that she has offended you (I know, unlikely but true). Sometimes when bosses are trying to be one of the team, things that are completely inappropriate that a workmate would say and get slapped down for are let slide (with the employee feeling offended and the employer being completely ignorant of the fact). If it's something that is going to eat away at you, let her know informally next time you see her (like over coffee) when it's just the two of you that she was a bit out of line and you were upset by what she said. Try and do this verbally since as soon as you put anything in writing (like an email) everything becomes very permanent and can escalate out of control. If it's something you can get over, try and ignore it (like giving her a once only redemption card - if she says something stupid again, take her down).
