Topic: pregnancy induced hypertension Posted: 16 September 2007 at 7:44am |
i have had this in 2 of my 3 other pregnancies and it started in the last trimester within the last month so i knew there was an end to it soon and that bubs would more than likely be ok if for any reason had to come out fast...
so im 7 weeks pregnant now and had a blood pressure check the other day and it was already really bad- 145/92 and that isnt normal for me at this stage! (130/70 normal) i am really really freaking out, been scared and withdrawn for the last couple of days of course i did the wrong thing by googling (why dont i ever learn?) any way now of course i read the worst and im a mess! lol.
anyway just want to know if anyone else has had it this early on in pregnancy, i read that before 20 weeks gestation its known as cronic hpertension?
what has the outcome been? i need to here some good cause all i saw in my search was increased risk of bubs and mum dying! (i said i read the worst!) strokes, IGUR baby, still birth, placenta aging too fast, premature birth...
i need some sense knocked into me... i think i need to talk to a proffesional but i feel so stupid being so scared about probably nothing! meanwhile all the stress im feeling wont be doing me any good!
right sorry i really have needed to talk... i just feel so gutted, and am thinking thoughts in my head which i want OUT!

Hey Rach. I was at risk to have high BP through out pregnancy and any amount of stress pushes it right up. I also get symptomatic at a lower high BP than anyone else. If I am 140/90 I start getting nosebleeds ect.
What we did is to change stuff around totally and bring and keep it down during the pregnancy. Maybe talk to your midwive about it. (I dont really want to give advice on it without you talking to a professional about it). But it was stuff like eating more onions and drinking loads of water. Cut salt out totally. Like in totally.

thanks shirena
im just having one of those moments, hubby is at work and im a right mess in tears, i just dont know who to talk to, my midwife thinks its normal for me but i know it isnt... im just scared for my health aswell as the baby's health. i got really depressed in my last pregnancy with kayla when it shot up to the highest it has ever been i was so scared.
its hard talking to some people casue its like its only high blood pressure whoopdedo! but i know how serious it can be.
i stopped drinking caffine as soon as i found out i was pregnant and have been excersising as much as i can between the nasty pregnancy sickness i have had. thanks for the advice, will get more water into me and cut out salt! eek! how do you do that? lol. i just find it so hard to ask for help from people i feel bad.

I had really high blood pressure early on...I think brought on by the stress of finding out i was preggers. anyway, was in Japan at the time and my doctor threatened not to let me go home for the birth if my blood pressure continued to be high, so went on a diet - no salt at all (soup in particular is really bad) and ate only fresh fruit and veges pretty much. Blood pressure dropped back down to acceptable and i could go home (although he wasn't happy about that either - thinking about the $4,000 no doubt). No side effects from the blood pressure for baby or for me, and with Taine it never came back - well possibly did but by that time I was refusing to visit my japanese doctor.

Awww... I haven't had high BP so no advice, but just wanted to offer some support. I guess the stress of having #4 and not telling family (and anticipating what will happen when you do) probably doesn't help the stress much either.

soup bad? doh! i have had it twice this week! havent been feeling like much food at the moment so have just been eating what i can stomach.
my husband loves salt so he is going to find it hard but he has to cut back too, no salt in the cooking.
right so onto lots of water- no salt, exercise daily, eat lots of fruit and vege and reduce my stress! lol. this is going to be hard for me! im feeling so stressed. my family is one of my biggest causes for my stress at the mo (mum dad and sis) and no matter how many times i have told them how much it hurts and stuff they dont listen... and dont seem to care. but thats a whole other long story too long and complicated it will be hard to eliminate that stress.

Perhaps then if you hadn't have had so much soup this week, your bp would have been 'normal' (for you) and so you're actually fine. Even if it's not the case, it might do ya good to believe it anyhow

lol sounds good teresa! i has also had a little bit of licorice that morning and have heard that can raise bp so i'll stick to your idea and try thinking positive. have just realised that every little thing i crave (especially to ease my sickness) is salty or has salt in it i think giving up salt is going to be harder than i thought,
hot chips are the best at easing my ills... so any other non salty things that have helped other people ease morning sickness? i have tried ginger beer but its so sweet and sweet makes me feel even worse (oooh maybe i could try a different brand?)

Dh had a high blood pressure for a short while so I read a book on how to reduce it naturally. It included tips like eating tomatoes/tomato sauce; grapes/grape juice; and dark chocolate 85%+ cocoa. Reducing salt will help too.
Have a chat to your m/w or have a look in the library for a book you can read.

Hey Rach, I've had high blood pressure for years & it's thought to be a hereditary condition in my case. I always thought that it would be an issue in pregnancy but for some reason, my BP is now sitting at normal readings for the first time in yrs.
The other ladies have already given you wonderful advice but I think that stress is a big part of high BP & thinking & worrying about it won't help (easier said than done I know). I go to yoga & listen to a relaxation CD as often as I can which I think really helps me to relax & not think about anything else. But with 3 other kids running around you may not have the time to do this
Best of luck & try not to worry.

Ha ha busymum, I obviously have no kids aye! I find it hard enough to find a quiet half hour to listen to the relaxation CD & we only have a cat (she always wants to jump on the bed with me & it nearly gives me a heart attack)...

Hi Rach,
Another one here who had high BP with pregnancy, although I was like you with your previous pregnancies and only had it in the last few weeks. However, it took ages to get back to normal after the birth and I'm really paranoid and scared about it shooting up again this time, so I know how you feel! Google is not your friend in this regard (been there!).
Heaps of good advice on here, especially about the salt and drinking lots of water. Sounds like you are onto it with exercise. Licorice definitely does put BP up, so stop eating that. And when you have your BP taken at the midwife, try to get her to take it after you've been sitting down for a while. I've also heard that accupuncture can help with blood pressure, so you might want to look into that?
For me, knowing that I am doing things to help makes me less stressed about it, although I always get nervous before a BP check, which doesn't help! Just remember that BP is variable, it changes at different times of the day. You'll probably find that your next reading will be back down again.

Sally belly, I didn't mean it quite like that! Any dad with 3-4 kids had better make himself available for his pg wife to have time out from time to time.... or else!

Rach I have had it bad as well. With Josh it was all over the place. If it continues they may put you on BP pills (I hated them - they made me sick) but it may control it enough till 36 weeks.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I had massive stress with my first pregnancy(was a teen and parents kicked me out) so at 7weeks it got so bad I had really bad bleeding so went straight to hospital and found out my BP was dangerously high so was ordered strict bed rest for 5weeks with only light swimming or walking and they also gave me an easy to follow diet plan. After three weeks my BP was back down even though I was still going to school and working at night(I know stupid 16yr old!).
After this my BP would be up one week and down the next one I did have to go into hospital a couple of times over night when it got really high near the end of the pgy but as long as I remember to eat right and take it easy I was fine.
Anyway I'm not sure this is any help at all but I did carry my daughter to 41weeks 3days and both of us were fine.
Talk to your midwife about your concerns and I'm sure she would be able to give you more reliable information about it rather than whats on the net.

I was just flicking through a pregnancy mag(even though I'm not pg...yet! ) I someone had written in saying that eating bananas every day is ment to help regulate BP during pgy. I'm not sure how accurate this is but a few bananas would hurt, and I also found that bananas helped calm my cravings down a bit too. Well they did in my first pgy but not in my second pgy.
