this is probably your best bet.

Just be aware that you need to give 3 weeks notice and it's at your employer's discretion to take you back early if you've originally requested longer leave.

Hope it helps

I didn't know that.

I'm probably going to go back between 6 & 8 months but was planning on taking the full 12 months just in case we had a windfall or something which meant that financially, I could take longer.

Gosh, need to think about this one. They'll probably want a more definitive answer than that so they can work out what to do....

So, what you're saying is: They can say, No you said you were taking 12 months so we've contracted your role out for 12 months so sorry, you can't come back yet

Hmm really, thats not the understanding I have. Our company specifically notes in all fixed term agreements if they are covering mat leave that the encumbent may return early and if so your contract will end early. They also state that the fixed term period will be from xx/xx/xx until approximately xx/xx/xx.

MrsH, it may pay to check your employers parental leave policies and discuss your plans with your manager. I have told my boss that I will be applying for the full 12 months and will be returning when my money runs out lol. I have told her that when I make my official parental leave request I will give her a approximate time that I expect I will return. I have also told her that I plan to start my leave at 37 weeks however we have both agreed that no pregnancy is the same and we will play it by ear as it progresses.

I think the key is to be open and honest about your plans and communicate any changes as they happen.

Tamz, I will have a look at work on Monday, I am sure we have a letter we give staff that they just fill in the blanks...

Thanks guys
My situation is that my boss wants me to return back to work, I am willing to go back as long as I can change my hours, therefore want to complete a formal letter advising this to basically cover my own behind
Would love to not have to go back but the money situation is very tight at present and I think this would really release the pressure on us while having time with our daughter as well. Daddy will be spending the time with her while I am at work so at least he will get the bonding time not just me
