Topic: Another one of those how long topics... Posted: 28 January 2010 at 11:36am |
How long does your child play with one toy/focus on one thing? Obviously this is going to vary with age but always interesting.
The background to me asking this is my mum ( ) is saying because Brennan has so many toys that he has a short attention span (along with my feeding him snacks that had MSG and werent organic OMG....) Of course she knows alll about it seeing him for half an hour once a month when hes all excited to see her. My mum says i should get rid of all his toys execpt for one so he just has to play with one.
But yea my answer to my question is he can sit down with his cars for about 15mins before going off to explore and then finding something else to play with. He can probably play for about half an hour before i would need to do something with him or change or scenery etc...

Daniel can go anywhere between 10 seconds and an hour with 1 activity/toy/thing lol.
I'd just nod and smile with those comments

Wow, 15 minutes - that's good!
Nod, smile, throw mental daggers and think "I know my son, I know my son".

Yes nod & smile is the best way to go!
All kids are different, Heidi plays with things for varied amounts of time, I swap her toys every week or two just to make them more exciting for her.
I must say if Heidi has all her toys out she does sometimes seem a little overwhelmed and I so I put some away and she happily then plays with what is out.
If its any consolation, I taught Heidi to say "Happy!" if I said "Heidi is?" and my MIL accused me of teaching my daughter to suppress her feelings and then went on to give Heidi a lecture on how she can say she is sad or depressed if she wants to, she is 1! WTF???? The joys of having a MIL who is a counsellor and thinks she knows more about what people are thinking and feeling than they do themselves Oops sorry to rant but that got that of my chest thanks

meh! What do mothers know? (of course, we mothers know it all...but I am sure our daughters will be just as frustrated with us).
Sounds normal to me...15 min is long time for a 1 year old. I would be happy if mine would leave me alone for 5 min

HUNTD your DS is about the same age as mine and they sound similar. Sometimes C will sit a play with something for 15-20 mins (or longer if it's a cellphone, computer cable or remote ), others he just races round the room looking for something different to destroy or get into
I think it's a boy/personality thing too. My cousin has 5 kids - 3 girls, 2 boys. She said it's amazing how the girls could sit with dolls or colouring or something from pretty early on whereas the boys have to be DOING stuff and running around a lot more.
LOL HeidisMum, teaching Heidi to say she's happy - very cute!!!! (And clever! Callum's only word is No at the moment lol)

mack can play with a few toys for an hour but jumps between them ie. toy car, a building block, and a cardboard tube. if he only has one thing he will play with that for quite a while but will sometimes put it down and go exploring instead. he will however play with nothing for hours. lol. if he has no toys at all he will roll round the house, crawl, stare out windows, watch ppl etc... i have a very odd wee boy.
i think it is totally normal for kids to play with toys from anything from a couple of minutes to longer if they are amused. if your child is happy then i wouldnt worry bout her comments. everything he plays with, whether it is one toy or many is gonna help his development and keep him happy. i think your DS sounds perfectly normal to me, it is natural to want to explore and play with new things

HUNTD You know what my MIL is like and what she does, and she loves the fact that Hollie can go to her toybox and is able to play with/explore whatever she feels like at the time. They learn through play, so what if their play takes them in 10000 differnent directions at once

I am grateful for my MIL!
JJ will sit still and play with something for 5 - 10 mins max. Usually he puts toys in his mouth, somehow, and runs round with them. Playing still is unusual. For a while he was fascinated by dropping things on the coffee table, and that kept him amused for ages. Hence all the dents in our coffee table!
Your wee man sounds perfectly normal.
Oh, and Hollie's happy comment is SOOOOO cute. I taught Jackson to say 'Yooouuuu' when I say "I Love...." Wonder what your MIL would have to say about that?!?
