You might have better luck finding out about the application process if you join the huggies.com.au parenting forum as well, not that I'm trying to take away from the wonderful forum here, but there are a lot more Aussies on that one who might be able to tell you.
And yes here it's $1200, but for some people it works out better to take 14 weeks of paid maternity leave instead.

Yup, you have to unfortunately choose which one will work out better for you, although you can ring them and they can go through it with you and see what the 'answer' is - but yeah, they won't pay both - I wish !

Well I looked into how you get the payout over here and its through whats called Centrelink. Within 23 weeks or something like that of the birth we can register the newborn and get our 3000 and then every week after that we get 137 as well.

Stevie - thats great that the Australian government provides that level of support to families. Ours is something I guess - not much but its a start.
Jax - thanks for that information.
Does anyone know - and I have looked at the website but am still not sure - much about the working for families thing? When we do get pregnant and after baby comes and I stop working, our income and having two children will mean that we will qualify for some assistance in the working for families package. But, do they assess your income from the previous tax year to determine your eligibility or will they go on what you are on at the time? Thanks |

We get free check up from our GP and hospital for pregnancy and to have birth as a public patient it is free. But to go through as a private patient and have your own doctor in the hospital with you costs money. Most times a regular doctors appointment costs about $50 or more but alot of it you get back if you lodge a clain through our medicare system. Just like the baby scans- not the 3D ones- just the normal ones. They cost $150 each session and you get a cd of the pictures- only about 6 or so. But you get like $85 back from medicare. Alot of health things we pay for over here we get alot of money back from medicare.
