Topic: Temping questions Posted: 04 October 2006 at 2:19pm |
Those of you that umsed a digital thermometer did you have it in your mouth for a while before you turned it on? Also my temps seem to be quite low and not the same every day. Has varied been 36.1 - 36.4 over 5 days...
TIA
Oh and I am doing this to NOT get pregnant, before anyone asks any questions!! lol

Do you have a special BBT thermometer or just a plain digi? Coz the BBt ones are more accurate. It sounds like your temps might not be accurate if they are fluctuating that much.
My pre-O temps were really low, usually below 36.0 and my post-O temps were between 36.3 and 36.5.
I used to turn the therm on then put it in my mouth. I did find that I got more accurate results when I used a mercury one tho rather than the digi as my mercury one read to 2 deci places.

The charts I have only go to one decimal place. I cant work out what the problem is. Its a new thermometer, I try and warm it up a bit first like it says, its the same time every morning... Hmmm, might email my NFP educator - I guess thats what I paid her for!

Yes, but you are paying them so you should make them work for their money! Of course, that's not to say that we don't have all the answers already

Aw, stink - I mis-read this and thought the post was called "tempting questions"... ho hum it's obvious I'm getting a little weency bit bored! I was all keen to see what these tempting q's were! Ah well, In half an hour, my cousin is on Cambell Live, so at least I've got that to look forward to! Be interesting to know how much work this natural family planning turns out to be though, Aimee, as I'd consider doing it one day too.

Dont worry about how low your temps are what matters is that you can see a solid shift in temps when you ovulate and a decrease again when your period arrives. My temps are averaging 36.12 - 36.06 and i havent ovulated yet.
I turn the thermometer on then put it in my mouth coz it will only stop taking temps when it reaches your temp and stays there for a bit. Warming the thermometer wont make a significant difference.
Hope that helps.

Oh and yep BBT thermometers are way more accurate i went from one from the chemist and my temps were going from 36.2 - 36.8 over 5 days and since i have been on the BBT its been way more accurate. Try and get a thermometer that measures in 2 decimal places instead of one I know where u can get a good one PM me if your interested PS its only like $22 to hehe

OK so I read the instructions slightly wrong on the thermometer so will see how it goes over the next few days! Also doesnt help that I take it at 5.15am cos thats when Daniel gets up for work, sometimes I go back to sleep sometimes not so really is the best time to do it...

It doesnt really matter when you take them as long as its within half an hour of that same time and before you get outta bed
Oh and that you have had at least 3 hours sleep

I don't know what kind you have but we got a digital one and contacted the manufacturer as the temps were like 35 - it turned out they had a faulty batch - so we were to send it in and they'd replace it.

Aimee I used to take mine at 4am coz that's when Willie went to work and we used to BD before he left (sorry, TMI!) so I had to temp first. And my temps always showed a clear patterb, I think they were just a shade lower than they would have been if I'd taken them later.

YEah I kind of figure it doesnt matter what the actual temp is as long as I'm consistent and get a pattern

My temps are always 36.3 or within .1 of that pre-O and shoot up to 36.6 or within .1 of that post-O so it sounds like you are varying alot. Remember that if you go to bed later than usualy or have a few drinks it may also effect it.
I just have a normal digital one and it beeps as soon as it is reading correctly so no need to 'warm it up' before I turn it on.

Also if u find your temps are rocky and hard to interpret and u dont have a thermometer that measures with 2 decimal points (36.00) then get one and u will find your temps will be alot more stable and easier to read.

My temps fluctuate a bit, anwhere from 35.9 - 36.3 pre O, then 36.4 upwards after O. I am not great at taking them at a totally consistent time either (usually 6 am, but later and later as term goes on and who knows when in holidays! I still have a clear pattern on my charts with that fluctuation.
I know some mornings I wake with an open mouth - obviously those days I get a lower temp. I also am wakeful at night and have tried taking my temp when I first wake (often around 3-4 am), then comparing it to the one around 6 - 7. Surprisingly I have found little to no difference.
One suggestion I have read elsewhere for people concerned about fluctuating temps is to take them 'down below'. A woman showed the two charts (oral vs vaginal) and it was amazing how different they were.
