I thought Karicare had refused to pull any formulas, I might be wrong tho. Karicare are seeing it as an administrative bungle as there are no definite links to babies being harmed, just a coupld of reports of diarrhoea in babies that happened to be on the formula, then it was picked up about the additive

Thanks for the info & making me aware of the situation Ladies
We are using Karicare Gold Plus & need to decide weather we need an alternative product..
I remember when Brae was on the stuff 2.5yrs ago it did the opposite.. Kalyx's are a lot looser (but not Diarrhoea like) & more frequent

Just watching the news, they just said that as it hasn't been tested they can't say whether its safe or not therefore have gone public about the fact that it 'might' not be safe.
NZFA don't have the legal right to make Karicare pull off the shelves, hence the fact that it is still available in stores.
But it has passed European standards so I guess its up to the individuals to make their decision on whether to use product or not.

Hi girls, I actually rang Karicare and the NZFSA respectively and got both accounts of the story before I made up my own mind.
First of all, and just for the record. I am hopping mad that they posted their initial story so feebly and drove me to ring these companies asking for information. Turns out that Olivia is on one of the Karicare formula's not affected (Toddler Gold Plus).
Ok, so to transfer across what I wrote today:

Have rug Nutricia and left a message to find out what is going on.
Have just rang the NZFSA and had a talk to the chick at the office. Thanks for getting my heart racing (chick who posted the original article without url)
According to NZFSA Karicare From Birth and Follow On (Gold Plus) contain FOS with is a type of enzyme (in fruit and veges) which the human body is not able to break down. If your child's sole nutrition is Karicare Beginner (from birth) or Follow on Gold Plus (especially) then they are asking to try and switch off to another brand. Apparently it is nothing to get alarmed about but a matter of urgency!
*Phew* I put Olivia on toddler formula!
I got the call back from Nutricia who said that the FOS is their Probiotics which is naturally occuring in foods like banana and onion (so salicyte foods?) anyways, the girl on the phone said it was a beurocratic issue (a competitor dobbed them in) and before I got her call I couldn't help but agree. The NZFSA had said it was a naturally occurring enzyme and I was thinking to myself "How is that a crime?" So anyways... For more helpful formula advice:

I have actually had a quick read into FOS and large amounts of it or children who are intolerance/allergic to lactose are advised to avoid it as it can cause gastro intestinal upsets.
One of the girls on EBB did a post on the information as well:

I think really make an informed decision before getting upset that your baby is being poisoned. TBH, Olivia fared even better on the Gold + than what she did on the regular Gold. Also I have noticed a pick up in her health generally since moving onto it and onto the Toddler Gold + (even though it isn't a problem with NZFSA).
