I am 7 weeks pregnant and am currently looking for a midwife. I was wondering if there are any Palmerston North mums out there who could recommend one? I am 37 years old and it took 2 years to conceive, so would like to find a patient, experienced midwife. I came across Jo Henwood and Fiona McRae but they are already full so have started looking at The Palms Team (Za Vivian and Jen Jochem), the Heretaunga St Midwifery (Megan Holloway and Nikki Murtagh) and Paula Bolt. Anybody had experience with these ladies? Thanks, I appreciate any comments. |

   Hi Palmy_mum to be,
sorry i haven't had experience with any of those midwives but I can recommend both Cheryl Benn and Annie Kinlock. I had Cheryl as my midwife with my last son, with Annie as back up and am using the same midwives this time round. Having had an emergency C-section the first time round I was terrified of repeating the experience! I truly believe if I hadn't had the midwives I had that's exactly what would have happened. (Cheryl is also the midwife co-writer of the New Zealand Pregnancy Book if that helps). They are both very popular though so do get booked up fast (I booked Cheryl the day i got my positive! Lol). Good luck with finding the right fit midwife for you :-)

Congrats Palmy_mum to be!! Sorry I haven't had any of those MWs- but my friend has had both Fiona and Za. She really likes Fiona and has had her 3 times. I had Katrina Symes, with Cathy Symes as back up (and present at the birth)- both of these ladies are fab. Good luck!

Thanks for your advice ladies! Cheryl, Annie, Fiona and Katrina are either already fully booked or away and Lois is not on the mamaternity list of midwives anymore      I will give Nikki Murtagh a ring since my friend recommended her last night and she is in the same centre as Megan, but will also keep Trish and Heather in mind. Thanks again! Congratulations and good luck Sag76 |

I had Anna Krakosky and she was fabulous, she is younger than you (and I) and that took a little for me to get used to as I'd had older mw's before but she is very experienced & I can't speak highly enough of her & her skills.

Hi Hun, 4 yrs ago I had Annie as my main midwife and Cheryle as my backup. To this day my sons birth is so raw. My waters broke early morning (Annie didn't believe me tho) by 2pm Annie arrived at our house where shortly after I started pushing. By 11pm, I was still pushing, and at home with no progress when Annie took me to the hospital. And by the way, that is highly illegal to leave a woman pushing for that many hrs! My baby was finely born (not breathing) at 12pm. I did not hold my baby for one whole week while he was on life support. It was a miracle he survived. Yes, I had too heard amazing things about Annie, But, no midwife should let a woman push for 9 hrs. I was extremely stressed and post natal depression afterwards so I could not voice my concerns. He is now 4 yrs old, with obviousious symptoms from the dramatic experience. So please, pick your midwife well. Nothing more important than your baby.

I had Katrina. She was FABULOUS. Sorry to hear she was booked!!! We'll be having her for any more babies, for sure!
Trish Cleland was recommended to me, but was booked up when I went to book, and she recommended Kathy or Katrina. Kathy was booked, and I ended up with Katrina and Kathy as the back up. (Mother and daughter, actually.) If anyone else is looking for a midwife, hubby and I completely and utterly would recommend Katrina Symes.

She was always there to help, and even when I worried about little things, she'd come and double check. I had a cruisy pregnancy, and a bit more of a complicated birth, and ended up having a c-section. But she was brilliant up until the hospital took over care for the c-section, and then again brilliant for post-natal care!

Alittleloopy, I'll ask my friend (who did some placements in Levin so knows the situation with their midwives & PN Hospital) if she knows anyone.

O NOT USE TRACEY GOFF - midwife - Palmerston North! I had developed pre-eclampsia and was first pregnancy, the trainee midwife working with her diagnosed me, tracey was so lazy she missed so many appointments and didnt take my symptoms or concrens seriously. I should not have been allowed to go full term but i did and then she didnt check my urine or blood pressure not once while I was in labour, I ended up in a critical condition and nearly died giving birth - thank god for the hospital team. I also had meconium in my waters, showed her my pad and she said 'thats normal' - it wasnt! My birth and her negligence is now being investigated with the Health and Disability Commission so stay well clear of this midwife!
