Topic: Ants!!! Posted: 12 September 2007 at 1:36pm |
My kitchen is being taken over by ants and it's driving me insane.
How do I get rid of them? If I get the house sprayed would that help? I can't leave anything sitting there because they are constantly on the bench looking for more things to crawl all over. They're hideous.

You need to find the source of them, like if they are coming from outside into the walls or have a nest in the ceiling and lay some bait so they take it back and all die. We spray with that mortein surface spray around the outside of the house every month and we very rarely get ants

The source I would say is all the bush around us. Apparently it's one of the bonuses of living in the waitakeres . Will order some of that mortein stuff with my next lot of groceries and see if that helps. Thanks.

We are completely overun buy ant too, we got an exterminator in but that only seemed to work for a week or two. They sell an ant bait at farmlands that the exterminator recommended it's called exterminant. It seems to of helped a bit.
Oh and I found out the hard way not to use the critus spray and wipe they seem to smell it from a mile away.

the morteins surface spray is good. my mums house is overrun by ants which seem to live in the walls - they chewed through some electrical wires. (she is renting and the landlord seems to be not worried). anyway the mortein spray didn't work for her so she rang and complained. they refunded her...;and then it turns out she hadn't read the instructions properly. but anyway, if the ants don't seem to be phased by the surface spray you can ring and get refunded.

We recently used some of that gel stuff that you can leave in little lids around the place. I put some in the back of the cupboard in the kitchen and bathroom and within 3 days no more ants! You can get it from supermarkets and harware stores for under $10!
It is sooooooooo easy to get rid of ants using this stuff. They are drawn to it and collect it and take it back to the nest and then they all die.
TBH I felt a bit guilty about killing all those ants!!!! but they are only ants

I use the mortein bait, it's liquid and I think it's what FionaS is talking about. I take it back to the source as best I can - ie the windowsill, or down in a corner etc, and make sure it's left out of reach of little fingers too. I hate ants! Palmy North is full of em!

Yeah I can recomend the liquid in the little plastic traps. I have used that for the last 2 summers - as soon as I see ants anywhere I put those down in the middle of the trial or as close to as possible. You have to watch out for little people getting into them, but my cats have never been near them! They seem to work really quickly too!!

We get our house sprayed once a year by Rugs n Bugs 0800 784 762 (we are out West too) and it kills everything, ants, flies, moths and every other creepy crawly insect that you get in rural areas!
The warranty is about 3 months, but honestly it lasts us a year before we have to get it done again.

I have a lovely man called Peter McLeod come and spray my house every 6 or so months, he is an absolute sweetie and when I had trouble with ants after he'd sprayed came back three times to respray (he reckoned it became a personal vendetta, he was determined to get rid of them!). And we've had no problems with ants since.
Am reasonably sure he comes out west as far as the Waitaks, PM me if you want his phone #.
