Just a quick question really. When you used prefolds for your newborn did you used newborn covers or could you go straight into small covers? My first baby was 3.405KG at birth if that helps to answer the question.

I'll be watching out for this one too. I have the prefolds from last time but hated the covers I had. They were horribly gapey and just didn't fit but I thought that might be because of older elastic. Will be getting thirsties covers because I love these for the boo's I have, just not sure what size to get. |

it would depend on how you were using the prefold. i used newborn though from memory, the better the fit the better the containment.

After having another quick look at the sizing I might get thirsties duo wraps which fit from 3-8kg. http://www.mothersinstinct.co.nz/categories/Cloth-Nappies/Cloth-Nappy-Covers/Thirsties-Duo-Wrap/  |

my girl was 3.5kg, we used NB for about 2 weeks max (and even then they were a bit small), then moved onto the small. I just folded the prefold in three and placed it in the cover. I change my girl quite often, so it wasnt really an issue with leaking.

My DD went into small covers at 3kg (bummi's super whisper wraps and super brites) even with scrawny prem chicken legs and I never had a leak. I didn't do any of the fancy smancey folding either, just the trifolded prefold laid into the cover. I particularly liked the superbrite covers because they had a double leg elastic/gusset thing that really did a good job of keeping in poosplosions.

I like the Super Brite covers too, but have only 1 medium so can't comment on the newborn/ small sizing.
I've also been looking at Weehuggers , the smaller size is meant to fit from 2.7kg to 8.2kg and also has leg gussets. Haven't tried them yet - I'm thinking of getting the larger one to try on my toddler, then if they're good, get some in the smaller size for my next newborn.

baby M was 3.36 kg and small size covers didn't work for her. We had lots on trial - including bummis whisper? which are supposed to be one of the best - but the only ones that worked were the newborn size covers that we had in our YoYo hire kit. She stayed in them for ages - at least 2 months.

hmm seems its hit and miss as to what will work.
Do you think using a snappy will make much difference in terms of containment I guess if I do use a small?
I may just buy a mix of the two. Argh I wish babies could tell us what size and build they'd be before they were born. LOL.

i prefered a snappi - if i just folded it and lay it in the cover it always bunched and i had to change covers more frequently.

I've used prefolds (with snappi) and Bummis Whisper Pants since birth. Can't rave enough about them. VERY economical and can withstand most poo explosions |

Oh, forgot to say... a big advantage to the Whisper Pants is that you can pop a couple of stitches in the leg holes to make them a tighter fit and then remove as they get bigger. Even though my boy was 9lb 3oz, I still had to used 'stitched pants' for the first couple of weeks Oh, annnnnnnnnd they have fantastic resale value. I got nearly as much as I'd paid for them, as I'd bought them on special offer |

I only had small covers but they were too big, so I got mum to knit a couple of woolly covers in just the right size which I used for a couple of weeks till she fitted the small covers. Next time I'll buy a couple of newborn covers too.
