Topic: Confused about car seats...! Posted: 08 February 2008 at 4:31pm |
Bella is just about too big for her capsule now and we are looking at moving into a convertible car seat but I am SO confused (and yes, I have trawled through some of the old posts but am still stumped )
We had a quick look at Baby Factory today and I remember a lot of you saying the Safe and Sound make is quite good. The salesperson in there also pointed out this model...
Car seat
...but I couldn't for the life of me see anyone who had a car seat that went up to 36kg and is that safe? Would it be worthwhile? Or was she just trying the 'hard sale' on me? We went away more confused then when we went in !
Any advice/suggestions are most welcome!

We have a carseat that goes up to 65lbs (29.5kg). My rationale with carseats is that we would get the best we could find -- the one we ended up getting cost around $600. Your child needs to be in a car seat until they are a minimum of five years old, and then they need to be in an approved child restraint until they are seven years old. I think the carseats that go up to 36kg are meant to take your child right through to age five, hence the high weight limit.
What is it specifically that you are confused about?

I guess I'm wondering whether it will actually last until she is 4-5 as it says, whether it will fit our car OK, whether is a reputable brand, and whether it will last...

Looks like one we were tried to be sold as well. Looks quite good and $300 is a good price too. In the end we went with the safe n sound because we were hoping for another baby and the capsule had expired. That one doesn't do newborns.

Well we have the Safe 'n' Sound Guardian Seat ...and I am really pleased with it so far. Yes only goes up to 18kg ...im guessing thats around 3years of age? ...and then you move up to the booster seat I think!
It's good having this convertible carseat as it serves bub well when you put them rearfacing up to 12 months ...and unlike a lot of other carseats on the market its very well padded! I'm very very happy with this carseat and everyone I know also uses Safe n Sound carseats.
As far as i know they fit into all/most cars and for the price you pay, it works out nearly the same because when it comes to buying the next car seat, all up you will be spending around 600-700bux too.
Really its up to the person. Good Luck (sorry if im not much help lol ...i'm not too clued up on carseats ...)

Shell, we got a safe n sound premier here from babycity (you have to scroll down to see it) and we love it. Incidently we didnt pay that much as it was on sale.
Safety first is a reputable brand. But it is sooooo confusing. I am happy with my purchase and if you want to meet up sometime next week I can show it to you.

Yeah, I'm thinking $300 isn't bad if its going to last till 4 years old, but it did look confusing...I don't think Bella is going to ever be a big girl so it should last her until she needs to go into the half booster seat...Anyway, we have no money at the moment to do anything, so it will have to wait until pay day!

just dont get the Evenflo Discovery.
Here is what consumer just emailed me.
The problem
There are concerns the car seat could fail in certain types of collision.
Details
Evenflo Discovery infant seats made between 2005 and 2008. Models recalled in the US are 390, 391, 534 and 552. Only the 390 and 391 models have been sold in New Zealand, but it is possible other models have been brought in privately.
What to do
Evenflo is providing owners with a free extra fastener to keep the seat in place. It will not be available here for 4-6 weeks - in the meantime retailers will take names of those needing one and they will be contacted when they arrive.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US) is urging owners to keep using their car seats while waiting for the new fastener.

BF will generally let you try it in your car to make sure it fits. When we bought ours they told us to just bring it back if it didn't.
We have the Safe and Sound Meridian AHR and love it. It is a convertible car seat so it is the only one we have had since Sam was a newborn. She is so comfy in it, definitley worth the $550 we paid for it

The gremlins are in Safe n Sound Guardians, Maya is in a Cosco Alpha/Omega booster which had a 5 point harness when she was smaller but now just uses the normal seatbelt like a standard booster.
