Topic: How long is too long between wees? Posted: 07 June 2008 at 6:02pm |
Caitlin has been going really well with her toilet training - we've had no accidents for a weeks now YAY!
But - she seems to be holding on for too long now. She's going on average every 2.5-3 hours and sometimes longer.
Is this "normal"? Does it sound right to you guys?
I took her to the GP last night after she had a very unusal 3 hour afternoon nap, then peed like a horse, afterwards she pointed to her crotch "owies"
So I paniked and thought the worst "bladder/UTI infection"
But GP gave her the all clear but without a urine sample as she wouldn't pee at all at the GP office.
She doesn't seem unwell, except for when she wakes after her naps and is in a FOUL mood. She spent the best part of an hour this afternoon laying on the floor crying and wouldn't let me touch her

Char is about the same actually, she went at 11.30ish this morning then not again till we got home at 3.30. Its pretty normal for her - I also don't go all that often, once every 3-4 hours.

Aww that sucks Toni, she seemed pretty good today apart from the smokers cough! I hope everything is ok on the medical side of things like the doc says.

Normally I would just think nothing of it - but it's the fact that she points to her groin and says "owies" then when she does go she pees like it's never gonna stop lol

Sound normal. Jake goes for hours without going, and I used to worry, but if you think about it, you mightonly go 2 or three times a day yourself. Maybe she was saying owies cos it hurt having a full bladder and the relief was instant and she didn't know how to verbalise that?
Also, RE the waking, Jake is always foul and slow to warm up after an arvo nap. Never used to be, and soemdays he's fine, but more often than not I just leave him be for a bit and let him come out n his own, although Ido go down and check to make sure he hasn't gone back to sleep or isn't destroying anything, lol.

It is funny you should mentioned this as I wanted to ask the exact same thing for a while now. In the beginning she would go every 2 hours and now she is going once in the morning then at 1 and again at 3:30 and then at 6. (I still take her as it just seems to go to long although when I leave her she seems to go to the potty by herself and not the toilet)
Was also worried about UTI's but now seems to be normal from reading the above replies.

Michaela goes for long periods without wees in the afternoon (about 2.5 - 3 hours) but first thing in the morning she has a wee cluster where she'll go 3-4 times within one hour. I think it's because it's still new to her so she gets quite excited and jumps up off the potty before she's ready then holds on until I've cleaned it and put it back for her.

Sounds normal to me, usually with a UTI she would be going more often and only a tiny bit at a time, and they often tend to lose continence too and start having accidents.
Not sure what to make of the owies tho? She doesn't have thrush or anything like that?

When she does that, is her sleep nappy actually wet or do you think she holds on while asleep too? That could be it.. if you think about when you have to hold on and get over-full it hurts a bit when you finally go..... maybe?

I think either she is mis-associating the urge to go as "owies" but it's only a prompt to empty the bladder; or she is holding on (e.g. for fear of using toilet) and only going when she has no choice - my pick would be the first one.

I found Ella got to a stage with her TT where she'd hold on for that long and then it would be sore when she went because her bladder was soooo full, like Janine said.
She's becoming a master at the wee-wee dance
The only thing I'd worry about is the pain when she does actually go, putting her off going IYGWIM.
Would she sit on the potty as soon as she gets up from her nap? Maybe you could give her a drink and a story on there while she wakes up..
Ella used to wake up really cranky and touchy from her naps too, it took her a good 10-30 mins to properly wake up.

Random, but Jake woke at 1.30am to go to the loo, and this morning wouldn't let me take off his night nappy( that had been dry when he went to the loo at 1.30) asked me to take it off around 9am this morna nd it was still dry! thats a LONG time to be dry, I was expecting a full wet nappie.

Yeah we've had a lot of those accidents lately too. It makes me cross because she wasted all that time prancing around with her legs crossed and telling me that she didn't need to go!

Hannah holds on for hooooours sometimes. I honestly don't know how she does it!
I also wonder whether the wee is stinging her? I know when Hannah has gone a day at creche and not letting teachers know when she has gone to the toilet (and not wiping properly ) she gets really red labia and the urine stings like hell so she refuses to go to the toilet.
Sounds like she is doing well to me!

I don't give 'em a choice when I see the dance.
"Oh, you're doing the toilet dance - go to the toilet please!!"

Your girls must listen better to you than mine does to me! Ella will sometimes argue that she doesn't need to go right up until she's running desperately for the toilet!

I'll say! Maya fought my mum tooth and nail over going to the toilet before bed when she was here last week, and she was so damn smug when she woke up in the morning - "see Neema, I DIDN'T wet the bed!"
