right so after a long week or syringe feeding fluids, 41 degree temps, severe diarrhoea, not eating, dry nappies, trips to emergency and so on, my baby is finally looking better. he has been on the books as an at home patient until sunday where they were happy he was in no danger and would be fine with regular pamol and fluids. we are now up to day 10, we have no fevers, vomitting, nappies are now wet etc.. but he still has the diarrhoea. we have just started him on food again and he started taking milk again a few days ago, he wakes up during the day and aside from having cabin fever and being a bit grumpy he seems almost fine.
what should i feed and not feed him in order to help control the diarrhoea? also is it worth swapping him to soy formula for a few days in case he is one of the kids that developes a temporary lactase intolerance that comes with prolonged diarrhoea? any advice would be great, his bum is raw, he still has a sore tummy and he is going mad being stuck inside the house all day. any advice would be great

I was actually going to suggest cutting dairy.... Jake had a teeny virus at 3 months and he is STILL lactose intolerant! Soy or a Lactose free formula might be worth a shot (unfortunately they dont do sample sizes grrr)...
Hugs hun, but yeah he is on the mend finally!

thanks mel, i ran to the super market and got a lactose intollerant formula. i figure it is worth a try and surely it cant do too much harm by swapping for a couple days. if he is getting better ill keep him on it a week and go back to normal to see what happens. now i just have to figure out what to feed him, at the moment he is still on cruskets for lunch and muesli for breakfast cos im too scared to give him anything else and he doesnt have his appetite back yet so he doent care much. i wonder if plain old jar food will be ok? as much as him being better is more importnat than uni, if i dont go back soon i dont think ill be catching up :S

Wow i could have written that post myself sometime last year. Its soo horrible isnt it. In the end i just gave DS whatever he wanted to eat, he seemed happy with baby custard, and bananas... not sure how that would help the bowles, but we went till about day 12 or 13 before we stopped having number 3's. It took at least another week before he was back to eating his normal amounts of food.
Big Hugs, hope he gets better soon. |

apples have pectin in them which helps firm up the bowls, pears have it to the same extent as well.
Hugs, that must have been an aweful experience for you all.

yea. i missed out by two weeks. i do bio-medical science at uni and found out about it 2 weeks too late. dammit! lol. i already have it ordered in for my next baby though :D my kids go into creche quite early cos of uni, even though its only a few hours a week its more than enough exposure. in fact it was only macks 2nd week when he got sick. lol. all good though, if he doesnt catch it there he would probably catch it at mainly music or family or something anyway.
he has been fine since we swapped his formula though :) so stoked bout that
