So i plan to go to England at the end of 2008 and im wondering how much do you think i would need (round abouts) to start off?
The ticket will be paid for (21st pressie) and ill be staying with my mum and aunty, so thats accomodation sorted.
For the rest, i have no clue where to start. I was thinking maybe save $100 a week for a year, but when its converted it doesnt seem like that much.
Im going on a working holiday, but ill need something to start off with before i find a job ya know? And i think i want me n bubs to at least travel for a wee bit before i start working and have to find child care for her.

What do you guys think?

$100 is a good start, I would start with that and if you have any bonus money put that in too. Also remember passport for your baby as well.
I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

if you hav to get a working visa for Uk theres a certain amount of money you have to take over with you.. I didn't (have abristish passport) but my friends had to and I think for memory it was $4000 or was it 2000 pounds? You also can set up a bank account in the uk for that money thru the BNZ (I have done it for several customers)

its still going to be expensive with baby....I would suggest maybe looking into upskilling here ready too...not ssre if you are trained...but even nanny courses and first aid courses go down a treat overseas. Nannying often allows you to have your own child with you too...and pay would be good over there, if you can work legally.

I would say you would need at least 20-50 pound a day even if living with family etc..just for transport, food, clothing etc....more if you intend to stay for a longer period as you will need bonds, furniture etc.

Work out what it will cost you in NZ then take that amount in pounds. Don't convert it, you spend dollar for pound.

I am pretty sure that to open a bank account in the uk you need about $5000 New Zealand. I would also agree that you need about 40-50 pound a day to be able to do what you want and get to places. If you are wanting to travel before you look for a job you will need prob about 10,000 New Zealand, that means you will be able to go anywhere and eat etc, as with a baby you are slightly more restricted as to where youc an stay.

I came back from the UK the year before after doing a 9 month working holiday with my DH.

If you are travelling on a NZ Passport with a working visa. You need a return ticket and 2000 pounds or proof of funds - If you have a credit card with a good limit you can have that.
You will need a Passport for your child.

New Passports are now $150each and last for 5 years.

You don't need a visa to enter the UK on a NZ passport.

When I was over there 10 years ago now, I spent the 2000 pounds I had to start off with in the first 12 weeks I travelled a lot, then I had to find a job.

Its easy to find work too. Live in nanny work is easy to get, don't go for mothers help. Where you do all their housework for not much return.

Where abouts are your Mum and Aunty, are they British?

Don't try to convert the money, it doesn't work out like that!!! You definitely spend dollar for pound over there!

We're planning on going in July and have budgeted $20,000 for the 3 of us - and we'll be staying with family for the majority of the 4 weeks we're off.

Check with someone first about the working holiday visa. There is a slight possibility that you are not eligible if you have a dependent. (But can't confirm that... have to look into it further... I just remember something along those lines coming up when I was looking)

You definately need a visa as you are wanting to work over there, if you were just holidaying them you don't. You will struggle to find a job without a working visa. From my very bad memory I think its about $150.

Its the most stressful bit working out how much money you need and its completely different going on a working holiday to going over there to live it up for a 6 weeks on a holiday.

We spent about $20,000 NZ in the nine months that we were there and we did extensive travel and worked for about 4 months of that as a live in couple on the very minimum wage!

Feel free to PM me if you want more info.

Yeah the visa is actually about 580. lol. ive loked up those costs and im hoping my dad will help me out a bit like he said he would.

Maybe i wont be going after a year
Might have to save up a bit more first. I dont plan to do a whole heap of travel when i first get there, but i want to do at least a little bit.

FLuery: My mum and aunty arent British, they are over there working. They are in Worthing at the moment.

That was for two adults tho! So I think that getting 10,000 together is achievable. Its amazing how easy it is to save when you have a goal.
