    Posted: 16 October 2006 at 1:28pm
My partner and I are going down to one wage in November and I am not going back to work until August next year.

Does anyone have any tips to save money or ways of getting extra money??

Also, does anyone work from home and what kind of work?

I just joined this mystery shopper thing - you go out, or sometimes make calls to different companies and rate their performances...honeslty not much money - $10 - $15 per job, but better than nothing in my opinion! Alslo, it's amazing what people will pay for crap you have lying around the house. I've sold a ton of books. Sci-Fi books are really popular, and you can actaully buy them at Salvos or something and hock them off for quite a bit.
I did Avon for a bit, but unlkess you have some people who WILL buy everytime, i didn't find it much good - although it must be said that this could've been because I spent any profit on buying stuff for myself.
Crafty people can also seel stuff on trademe. my mum has just started making neat booties- those sheepskin lined ones, and is getting a bit

what about something parttime or on weekends when your partner is home with baby? Also doing a budget will help a lot...its amazing how much we waste on coffees out, takeaways etc...beter to buy some good coffee and invite people around...
otherwise asking about a mortgage holiday also helps? some HP companies also will do it....pays to ask....means you dont have to meet some bills for a few months? usually max of three months...
Im freaking about our mat leave too....the payment for the first 14 weeks is about 1/4 of my usual pay so will be a HUGE lifestyle change for us....
Hoep you find something soon...

With all the money we got in return from family assistance and soon when we move and have a way higher rent to pay, we will be recieving accomodation supplement. If I had gone back to work we would only be getting $70 a fortnight, with govt subsidies and WINZ it is an extra $95 per week and we don't have to pay tax on that and I'm a SAHM. Although in saying all that I do wish to do something else to help out like pamphlet dropping or something to the effect where I can keep Olivia with me because working 2 nights a fortnight was the most horriblest thing ever!

lol I make baby sleeping bags. te he he
at the mo, the money is going towards the deposit for my dress.. I now have about $600.. only $800 to go, i am working night shifts and weekends to get extra as well.

but hhhm, when i was at home with paris, man i should have done the baby bags a loooong time ago.. i never knew they'd be so popular. lol

find something you're good at, and market it.
I taught my older sis in Matamata to decorate kids cakes and she's in hot demand.. I think she's gonna make up a pamphlet and start making a little money off it.

Just a wee note about the mortgage holiday thing. It seems like a great idea, but increases your repayment term BIG TIME if you don't increase the repayments as soon as your holiday is over.... I reccomend you read the fine print about that.

We had a huge drop inincome as well, when I stopped work, and I for one, really struggled, as I am a real "luxuries" girl, and found it hard to adjust... My biggest tip, which saved us as much as $150 a week, was to take out say $200 a week, and use it for groceries and whatever and that was all I got out untill the next week. I found I was just using the card(s) willy nilly and not really thinking aobut how much I was spending.... $20 here and there REALLY adds up.

Thats a good tip Jacobsmama - I know that I will be like that with a card - it's easier to be more disciplined with cash. Arrrrrgggghhhhh - i'm really scared about the whole going to one income thing. It kinda freaks me out. I guess it will all be fine and we will learn to manage but it still kind of scares me when I really think about it and I wonder - what the hell were we thinking!!!

I don't know about getting in extra money but here are some of our tips for saving money.Hopefully they help!

1. Power - check you power usage, does you power company offer a cheaper planan to better fit your needs? Turn things off when you don't need them. Even not leaving the TV etc on standby but turning it right off makes a difference. We started turning all applianaces (as was prectical anyway) off at the wall and our power bill dropped dramatically!
2. Phones, check what plans you are on, mobile or landland. We switched to Telecom although we love Vodafone becuase of thir text and now we can stay in touch with others more but our costs are less.
3. Grocery shopping...make a list and stick to it! Look for cheaper options, honestly Signature Range/Pams/Home Brand...they are all just as good and cheaper ie: Homebrand bread...$0.94!!!!! There is one family on another forum who shops for their family of 4 and the total is around $200 per fortnight! Also buy your meat and fresh fruit separately at a butcher and fruit & vege shop...it's normally heaps cheaper than the supermarket!
4. Meal planning - plan out your meals for the week/fortnight and shop according to that.
5. Credit Card - if you must have one then use it wisely. We have cut up and are paying off our others. Only B's ASB one is in action. We put the money for all our expenditures on this ie shopping, petrol etc, so the card is constantly paid off and we are earning points for vouchers. We're up to a $100 petrol voucher at the moment!

Hope these help a bit!

I have to agree with the no eftpos card thing. We have gone onto a budget leading up to xmas so we can pay one of our HP's off. By the time I finish work the only debts we will have is the Credit Card and Mortgage and student loans - but those are interest free now. We also turn the appliances at the wall and had noticed a drop in our power bill. I too changed from Vodafone last year to Telecom for my cell phone and have gone from an $90 odd bill down to $30 a month and it is on the phone bill so we collect fly buys from it. But for the same plan it was nearly $50 cheaper.

We are doing xmas club this year (and will probably do it again next year) and at the moment we have $300 to spend and we are still buying $10 a week for it in the budget. This will help us as for probably 3 or maybe even 4 weeks we won't have to worry about shopping (other than bread and milk) and the money we have in the budget for shopping we will use for xmas presents (we have already done Andrew, just family to go). Try and work out a budget now for when you go down to one income and stick to that so that you know what it is going to be like. You can go to budget services and they can help you for free which may help.

I changed my mobile from plan to prepaid and i am saving just over $80 a month. It is amazing. These are great tips ladies but the biggest thing is that i have to get my partner to stop spending money. He just spends it willy nilly and he is not the easiest person to talk to about money either but i am getting there.

Take his card(s) off him and give him an "allowance". My mum has done this to my dad for other reasons. I have this in a round about way. I get my card to go shopping and get petrol and if I have to pay for something eg today i'm going out and paying for the gib board we are getting.

I agree...take the card and give a cash allowance. It sounds harsh but it will be the only way!

We've been a bit more relaxed about so far with my parental pay coming in but we're starting to tighten up now and not spend the money or go out etc. It takes some getting used to but worth it in the end!

I have to agree - my hubby is the one with the money issues. I am ok about tightening things up and going without but he is completely shocking. I have resorted to a cash allowance for him too and even though I tell him exactly what our financial situation is and what commitments we have each pay - he always comes up with completely random things he wants to do/pay for that were never allowed for and then gets in to a sulk when I have to say no!! I thought us women were supposed to be the reckless ones - go figure!!
