I have lots of nappies S-L from DD but have decided to use covers and prefolds for the next bub due in September until it is big enough to fit my S snazzipants. Last time I had a hire kit for NBs and found prefolds and covers worked really well when DD was tiny.
For those that use them, how many covers do I need? I'm guessing I'll be using them for 6-8 weeks so don't want too many. Also how many prefolds do you think I need?

 TIA

For a basic kit I would have 3/4 NB sized covers and 5/6 small sized covers. Depending on the size of bubs they might fit straight into smalls. You will need about 18 prefolds, and I would also get some hemp style boosters, so you can use them at night for longer.
You can pick all this up on TM for a bargain, you just have to have patience and keep looking for a while. I used to check it twice a day for all the new listings and picked up heaps of buy now bargains, otherwise ask and they might put them up. Your other option is to hire a kit.

Thanks I've got boosters, liners etc from DD for the small nappies I already own. I have just brought a couple of nb covers and have 6 prefolds on my watchlist. I guess I figured because it took DD awhile to fit small nappies this bub will probably be the same. The great thing about flats and covers is they fit nbs so well.

I haven't done it yet as I waiting a few weeks before starting cloth on my son but for this bubs I have 18prefolds and 5 covers. I think that should be enough as the cover dry so quickly. I do have one or two tiny all-in-one nappies that a friend gave me so will use those as a back up if my covers run out on a particularly pooy day. lol.

I have used thirsties on my older son and have brought thirsties for this baby too. THey are great for keeping leaks in and don't leave marks on the baby either.

Bummis are good, the ones with the extra leg gusset.

I second thirsties. I've got both them a bummis and thisties gusset is way better at holding the liquidy stuff in. |

I don't think we've ever had a leak from our Bummis. The Super Brites have a double leg gusset thing which I imagine would fit nicely for a newborn (although I mostly have Super Whisper Wraps, but my baby is well past the liquidy poopsplosion stage ).
