Hi everyone
Just thought I'd share that today I went to the Plunket family centre and they told me that prepared formula is only good for half an hour (in a brochure they gave me it says 20mins but Pnurse said MOH say 30mins). That's half an hour after being made if water is warm or half an hour from first sip if water hasn't been heated.
I found this really interesting as my MW had told me an hour and then when I posted on here found I wasn't the only one keeping it that long.

According to this ministry of health link, it's 20 minutes..
"Use warmed formula within 20 minutes"

Personally I would still take it with a grain of salt, at some stages Erin would take half an hour to have her bottle - I certainly wasn't going to take it away from her at 20 mins ! I can understand wanting to be careful about hygiene etc but yeah, just doesn't sit right with me.

I think probably after there was a baby who died in hospital from formula being kept to long (not sure if that was the whole reason or part reason baby died) but Im guessing they are a bit more careful on what they say now.

That's also the reason why it's recommended that you make formula up when you need it rather than make up bulk lots at the start of the day. At least that's what plunket told us and it's something we switched to out of personal preference.

I didn't know that, I always thought it was up to an hour coz that's what my midwife told me, but then I guess they were still having EBM when I was under the midwife and EBM is a bit different to formula.
I make up all my formula in a bulk lot each night coz it saves time during the day, and there have been occasions where bottles of prepared formula have been in the fridge longer than the 24 hours recommended fridge time for formula and the gremlins have been fine. And when they were smaller and having half a feed then wind/change, other half of feed it would be up to an hour from start of feed to finish.
IMO, you just have to use your common sense. If you have a newborn, or a baby who is prem or sick then you'd want to be ultra careful coz their immune systems aren't as strong, but at the same time it's not worth watching the clock and throwing out a feed the minute it gets to 21 minutes since it was warmed.

thats weird cause when i had haleigh we were told to mix in an airtight jug or in bottles for the day and sit at back of fridge.
i still only fill my bottles with water and sit them in fridge waiting as I live with a serious coffee drinker and Im forever boiling it, and premix 2 overnight

I asked his question to the Karicare dietician yesterday who said it is OK for an hour. My little boy can take an hour to feed so that would mean making 3 bottles if you go by the 20 minute rule!

I had had no problems with Kaleb for some of his hour+ feeds but just found it interesting that there is a recommended time (in print form). Mostly it is if the bottle has been warmed or if the baby has sucked on the teat. The pamphlet I was given said pre-made formula was fine in the fridge up to 24hours.
Plunket nurse also said to me that if I fed Kaleb's bottle was due to 'expire' at 10.30 and if I tried him one more go at 10.28 that I could keep feeding him until he spat the bottle out again but not put it back in after that. She said this guideline came out after a prem baby passed away a couple of years ago and it is what she was obliged to say when asked
