I'm suffering with irritable uterus and have been having quite painful contractions every 5 minutes for the last 2 days (been in hospital and been checked out). I suffered with it in my first pregnancy as well. The only solution the doctors at hospital gave me was to grin and bear it and take panadol or codeine for the pain.
Today one of the staff midwives at Middlemore told me that I need to have more calcium and magnesium in my diet to help with it (700mg per day of each). Has anyone else been told to do this and did it work? Also any other hints that could help would be gratefully appreciated. I hate the fact that I actually wished I was in labour and preferred the thought of having a prem baby than continuing with this pregnancy. |

Magnesium and calcium are supplements that are good for easing muscular cramping, and seeing as the uterus is one heck of a big muscle, you should see an improvement after a litle while. Maybe try some rescue remedy to help you relax and take the edge off a little, and don't forget to keep up your fluid intake.
Would you consider seeing an acupuncturist at all?

I had irritable uterus really bad with the gremlins, it was a PITA and there were at least a dozen times when the contractions were strong and regular enough for me to think it was labour starting. I didn't find anything helped (altho didn't know about calcium and magnesium) but I did have lots of warm/hot baths which was a temporary relief.

Hippymama - unfortunately I had to finish work a lot earlier than planned so can't afford acupuncture. I know a few people who swear by acupuncture so it's probably worth looking into by anyone else suffering with irritable uterus.
Well I went and bought Pregevit which the midwife highly recommended to help with this. It has higher levels of calcium and magnesium than Elevit and you can get from Life Pharmacy. I'll update after a few days to see if there's any difference.

This thread is a bit old now, and I see you have had your baby! But I am 32+5 pregnant with my 2nd baby, and have been having contractions in the evenings for 2 days now, after several weeks of BHicks. The contractions go for about an hour, every 5 minutes and last for at least 30seconds, painful at first but die down towards the end (of the hour). Had to go to hospital last night as I suddenly, after an hour or so break, got INCREDIBLY painful strong contractions, and the whole way to the hospital had a rock hard belly with a constant period type pain and back ache. Of course, once I was on the bed in the hospital everything died down, and my cervix is still completely shut. Great. Turns out I have an irritable uterus......would explain why I had 3 weeks of contractions that started (at 39weeks), every time I walked before I had my DD. Have been searching for info on the net, but does anyone else get this??? I am booked in for a C for this baby at 38 weeks, but not sure I can endure another 5 weeks of 'labour'!! |

Geez I thought I had it bad... I get a few hours of 15 minutes apart for about 30 seconds but they are not that bad (as in panadol eases it enough for me to sleep for a few hour blocks). And they are not as strong, I feel bad for complaining now!
I dont think there is anything you can do other than up your magnesium and use heat/panadol to ease pain.

 Hugs!

I've started re-taking calcium magnesium with boron and happy to say my IU has settled right down    Could be a con-incidence I guess but hey it won't hurt lol

Goodness it's been a while since I started this thread, and I never did update it. Better late than never I suppose. MuppetsMama I took the magnesium and calcium and found a slight improvement with the irritable uterus. However I suffered from really bad SPD and was using crutches and after taking the supplements I had a huge improvement in the SPD symptoms. It made the pregnancy a bit more bearable. I still had to endure contractions every 5 mins for the rest of the pregnancy, but they weren't as painful as they had been.
Hope it all settles down for you.
