   Hi Everyone,
I am at the stage of looking for a LMC and planning the birth etc. I was wondering if anyone had any info on Auckland services that they had found particularly good?
I'm looking at some options but there doesn't seem to be a wide variety of free services close to home.
I'd also like to be able to choose my own midwife instead of having one allocated to me....
It's all a bit overwhelming actually and I'm not sure which way to go. Can anyone ofer any helpful advice?

 Thanks!

   Hi,
I'm in Mt Roskill, Auckland. Yeah I have had a look at the page but was wondering if anyone could make any reccommendations.
I moved to Auckland about a year ago and am a bit like a fish out of water. This is my first baby, and my mum lives outside of Auckland and doesn't know about baby yet so am feeling a little lost. But, feeling the need to get organised. Am very clueless as to which path to take.

a lot will depend on where and how you want to deliver. if you want a home or water birth then you will be limited as not all MW's will do that... so that will narrow down the search.   if you want to give birth at a birthing centre most of them have a list of MW's who are allowed to deliver at the centre...so for example birth care have a list on their website and it goes by area.
if you want to deliver in a hospital then most offer diff MW services too, just give them a call or check out their websites.
also there is MAMA maternity services there ph no is 629 5163. they have info re LMC's, care planning and antenatl classes.
 good luck

   Hi
I was thinking about a birth centre but the only ones I have come across on the net are either really expensive or too far away.
 I will contact MAMA though.
 Thanks |

birth care is free - escept if you want a private room or want to stay longer than the allocated time. most maternity services in NZ are free.

Hey sunnyhoney, your GP can give you a list of midwives in your area, and then the next step is for you to call around to them and see which one/s might be free to deliver your baby. They get booked up pretty fast, so try to do that soon. Their services will be free, unless your pregnancy has complications and you need to see a specialist. As for giving birth, you have a few options -- if you're planning a hospital birth or a birth at Birthcare, those services will also be free, and your subsequent three-day stay at Birthcare will be free as well. Your GP, and then your midwife, will be able to give you the "official" information about how to get registered with the hospital/Birthcare, so that all you do is turn up and have your baby -- no paperwork necessary, as it'll be filed well before your due date. Does that help at all? |

   Hi Katherine
Thank you, that's very helpful. I've been in touch with MAMA and they will send me some info too. I think I go to see my GP again next week.
It's quite exciting but I'm quite anxious about everything too. And it's so hard not telling anyone yet!!
I just found out today how far along I am - yay! Such a long time to go yet though |

Good on you, sunnyhoney! Don't worry, I know it's confusing at the start, but just ask lots of questions if you're not sure how things work. After a short while you'll be an expert on how the NZ health system handles maternity care! How far along are you?    |
