I have just started giving DS2 some yoghurt for breakfast. Almost instantly he has become constipated.
When he was much younger he had bad colic and reflux, and I went dairy free for a couple of months but didn't notice much difference. However, when I reintroduced dairy into my diet he became constipated, although within a week or two he was much better. Since then his poos have always been well formed, but definitely not constipated.

He has had other dairy for a wee while now - cheese sauce mixed into meat puree, some of the watties custards, cream cheese sandwiches etc. And I still have a reasonable amount of dairy in my diet. It's just been a very quick change with the yoghurt. There's been no other signs of intolerance - no rash or bloating etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it just be his tummy getting used to the yoghurt?

I have cut his yoghurt intake to half a 100g pottle per day, but he LOVES it and would gladly eat a lot more. My other son is possibly half yoghurt given the amount of it he eats. It's such a good, healthy food that I would like to be able to give it freely.

Dairy can cause constipation, maybe reduce the amount for now & see how he goes? Maybe also add probotics into it & see if that helps.

DS1 could handle dairy in baking, starter formula, cheese, but not yoghurt or straight milk.
I think it was due to the processing of the milk into the various products that made the difference. he was a refluxer too.

Which yoghurt are you giving him?
DD was a windy newborn as well and she was fine with the eziyo greek style yoghurt, the commercial varieties gave her a sore tummy.

She loves it I'm sticking to the home made plain one.

I use an eziyo yoghurt maker too, was using the Greek Style one too, but it got to be expensive so switched to making my own. So easy and save lots too, its pretty much the same as the bought stuff. And the natural bacterias in it should be good for his tum.
If he likes some flavours in it try mixing a little bit of homemade jam, or homemade dairy free custard, very good for little ones with no sugar content. And after 1yr you can mix in honey, also a favourite with my DD.
Let me know if you need recipes |

1 1/2 Cups powdered milk (full cream stuff - ie blue top)
1 Tbsp Easiyo Greek Yoghurt powder

Fill up container with cold water and mix/shake. The pop in yoghurt maker as per instruction fill it with boiling water and leave for 5-8hrs to set on benchtop, any longer up to 24hrs is fine but it will take on a more sour taste. Then pop in fridge door to use.

 The kiddies custard is
 1 Tsp cornflour
 1/2 Cup rice milk/oatmilk
1 separated egg yolk (keep egg whites in fridge and use in an omelette or scrambled egg.
 1/4 Tsp vanilla extract
whisk up in saucepan then heat and whisk until thickened.

Makes small batch, doesn't seem to hold together if kept in fridge. Great with steamed/fried apple and cinnamon.

Am going to experiment with adult flavours soon like cappucino and walnuts. mm mmmmm

You can also make yogurt in a crockpot! I googled recipes and it's very easy.

I would say it's probaby just his body getting used to it. My baby has dairy intolerance and if he has any dairy, he pukes a lot, gets sore tummy, gassy, however he does get constipated if he's had dairy too so it's definitely something to keep an eye on. I would think if the constipation passes he's just getting used to it, seeing as he's had other types of dairy without a problem. Is he more refluxy after dairy? My sons intolerance caused his reflux as it turned out.
Also I think whenever a new food is introduced they can get a bit constipated anyway? My DS definitely did when he started having new things recently but it passed now it's the opposite lol

Thanks guys. I guess I'll keep with my plan of just giving a half yoghurt and see how we go.
Wiggly_jiggly, no we haven't seen an increase in reflux which I would have expected. I have just taken him off his losec successfully too which is great.

His constipation is not terrible (like when we started solids) so hopefully it passes. We have no dairy issues in the family, so I have my fingers crossed.

But it's good to know that it *could* be a sign of an intolerance, as I will watch him carefully with dairy.
