As a plastic type of mat that would fit under a childrens table and chair to hold any mess. DS is constantly putting marks on the carpet. (No lino area for him to eat) and im sick of try to get the stains out. Surely there is something instead of a towel??? 
Where can i get one? Have looked at a few places even on TM.. could be looking in the wrong place though.

If you go to spotlight they have some vinyl type stuff thats pretty similar to lino, you could get a metre or 2 of that and just roll it up between feeds and stash it somewhere

Hi, i got a "messy mat" from the Warehouse. It was only a few dollars. Or you could just get a cheap shower curtain. Both of these would go in the washing machine too.

a shower curtain would be an option too - you might be able to pick one up more cheaply than the vinyl stuff from spotlight. Having said that, they do a vinyl thingy that has roads and things on it so could be dual purpose.

I picked up a cheap plastic table cloth from spotlight, its been fab so far.
I looked at getting some of that vinyl material that they just cut to your measurements initially but it was really expensive.

They have "messy mats" at Farmers and Baby City too, not sure how much they are but pretty cheep I think. Was thinking of getting one now when I'm trying to get DD to eat by herself with a spoon.

Polar fleece throws are good as well and you can chuck them in the washing machine to clean instead of wiping them.

Yep any of those would be a great idea, although I'd recommend 'investing' in something quite sturdy if it's for long-term use. the plastic tablecloths can wear holes in them after not too long, particularly if your wee one is twisting the chair about.
If only there was a food 'cube' you could get though, the fling factor means we have food spread in all directions some nights!! I wish some days I could sit him on the deck and hose him off afterwards...

Haha, that is exactly what I plan on doing come summer 
The cheap tablecloths are so cheap it doesn't really matter too much. And they're huge so I have ours folded over in half so its double thickness at the moment, but I could chop it up and have 2.

We have the same problem with our carpet, Manda!
We started with cheap tablecloths that got ruined pretty fast. Then I got some of the vinyl stuff from Spotlight when they had a sale on, and I got the one with the road map pattern, so he can play on it too. He loves it! Very durable and easy to clean, and it was worth the extra few dollars for us.

We use a vinyl / heavy duty plastic table cloth type thing for messy play / crafts etc, no way a table leg would wear it through, can you buy a square of vinyl from somewhere to the size you need??

Oilcloth makes great messy mats and doesn't fray - you can just cut it to size. Femme de brocante have some gorgeous designs on thier website.

We used one of those blue tarpaulins from a hardware store. When it needs a wash peg it to the close line and spray with the hose. I would, if I could do it over, buy a sturdy piece of lino from an off cut place as it is easier to wipe between hosings. Doesn't crumple etc.

This is what we've done too - I got ours from the $2 shop and it's lasted a few months so far.
