Has anyone had experience with this? Does it often move away from the cervix or is it likely to stay low?

Often moves away. More so with anterior placentas than posteriors, but in both cases the uterus stretches. I gather they pick it up at the 20 week scan then will send you for a rescan at 32ish weeks. Depends on the midwife but I was told that they want the placenta at least 2-3cm away from the cervix. Mine was 1.4 at 20 weeks and 7cm at 32 weeks.

About 90% or thereabouts that are low at 20 weeks are suitably far away from the cervix by 32 weeks. If it's still low then, you can start fretting, but at this stage don't stress.
And for some it moves after 32 weeks too - mine was still low at 32 weeks but fine by 36 with DD.

Thanks guys. I am kinda wondering why at the 12 week they said it is attached at the back of the uterus and now it is low lying...does that mean it just got closer to the cervix as it grew?
I won't stress to much about it for now. I have another scan in 6 weeks from now and hopefully there is some movement away by then.

Oh and does anyone know if it is more likely to move sufficiently if it is posterior and low lying or anterior and low lying?

It's probably not easy to tell at the 12 week scan as things aren't very big. Probably all placentas look low lying at that point if you see what I mean. As far as I know, because of the way the uterus grows, anteriors are more likely to move up, but most of them do move up regardless.

Mine was low lying - about 1cm away from top of cervix and it had moved far enough away at a scan I had at 32 weeks.

I had this at my 20 week scan - I knew something was up tho as I was feeling like I was ready to have baby at 15 weeks! Went back for another scan at 32 weeks to find platenta had moved away...I have heard that in most cases it does move away!

I'm having a scan next week to find out if mine has "moved", or been stretched out of the way ... but my understanding is most do move - unless it's placenta praevia (which I had last time), they don't move
actually let me clarify that, a grade 4 placenta praevia doesn't move ...

Mine was still low lying at 32 and 34 weeks bit by full term was border line though at 42 weeks was fine. Apparently most are.
