   Hi,
I am just wondering if people could give their feedback on Moses Baskets, Natures Sway Hammocks and Pamco Cots (or whatever else you think might be useful for a first time Mum to know when starting shopping!).

There are so many brands and variations of things it is hard to know where to start. We don't want to spend a fortune but also would rather pay a little more for bigger items so they last.

 Thanks in advance.

I have none of the above but my SIL has a moses basket and swears by it. Great as it's so portable and you can take it into the lounge for day sleeps, round to people's places etc etc. The only thing I would say is that I was surprised by how small it is for how pricey they are (so may only last a couple of months depending on how big bubba is)- if you do get one i'd highly suggest having a look on Trade Me rather than buying it new.
I had a second hand old school style cradle which was FAB. Again, i'm sure you could pick this up super cheap on TM. It was great as you can rock it (a lifesaver for getting DD to sleep) and way bigger than standard bassinettes/moses baskets. It didn't come with a mattress so I got foam cut at pararubber and sewed on a cover. Bit of a tangent but I LOVED the cradle and that would be my suggestion!

We had a Natures Sway hammock and I loved it. We had a hook in the ceiling in the lounge for day sleeps and another in our bedroom. It was so easy to resettle DS if he woke and he slept really well with the gentle rocking motion. I can't recommend them enough!
We got the carrycot that fitted our Mountain Buggy and used that for sleeps if we were away for the weekend...it was really convenient and portable.
Good luck - there are so many options out there it's hard to know where to start! |

I loved the hammock but at 8 weeks my daughter decided she hated it. Was very glad I'd gotten it as a second hand bargain. I do have my fingers crossed for my next baby though. We have a hook in the ceiling in the living room but used to hang it from doorways when we went visiting instead of a portable bassinet.
I didn't have a Moses basket but close friends did and yeah, they're smaller that a regular bassinet so despite their cost they don't last as long. I never understood that people go on about the portability either, our bassinet wasn't that hard to move around/lift.
You can survive for quite a while without a cot if you have a big bassinet. So plenty of time to look around. This is what I lashed out on price wise (well ok, my MIL lashed out) because I wanted really solid for several kids, they get used for quite a while and I was hoping for reasonable resale value as well. So we have a touchwood cot and that ticked all those boxes. They are expensive though and certainly not essential to spend that much.

I had a moses basket and i loved it. It was quite expensive and DS is quite long so he was into the cot at around 6 weeks anyway so it was a bit of a waste of cash. However DS was 3 weeks old when the Chch Feb quake hit so i ended up moving him and his basket to wherever i was in the house while he napped because i was so paranoid about it so it was worth every cent for that reason. Nothing a bassinet wouldnt do anyway i guess. I would personally either not bother with a hammock or bassinet at all and just put bubs straight into the cot or have a good measure of the bassinets and see which one is biggest and will last longest!

We have a naturesway hammock and a pamco cot.
The hammock was great, but after a few weeks my daughter decided she hated it - and she slept in her cot with her arms stretched out (she also hated being swaddled).I like that you can move them around the house, we have the stand and hooks. You can pick them up pretty cheaply on TM and just buy a new mattress.

Pamco cots, ours broke within weeks of using it, one of the side bars snapped. Then recently our then 12mo was standing up shaking the rails, as all 12mth olds do, and all the side rails popped out! My brother is a builder and he fixed it for us so that it was stronger than new, but i would be very wary of buying one, as if its that flimsy it is a really danger. Do a search in the product section on pamco cots here before you buy one. We are looking at buying another cot for baby #2, and thinking Mocka or thecotstore.co.nz

Hammocks all the way! I got ours quite late in a desperate attempt to get my girls to sleep during the day and it worked. I cannot recommend them highly enough. So portable too.
I got both of ours on TradeMe.

Living in a small 2 storey house where most of the living is done downstairs, we would have been lost without our moses basket in the early days. We bought a Baby Trendz one which is well made (on special, too) so I'm sure it will last us at least another baby. :)

I got given a moses basket and really liked it. We got a good lot of use cos DD was so small, and the portability was handy (moved it round the house with me too). I think any of options can work fine though, depends on your preferences.

   ive one similar to this,
http://www.trademe.co.nz/baby-gear/cots-bassinets/bassinets/standing/auction-399092249.htm

cant seem to upload my photos a wooden larger old school basinettes that DH painted white , got a new mattress from babycity, sounds the same as hayz001, dds were both in it till 9months.

i brought a pamco cot and highly recommend it, it also has a basinette level, and splits down to a wee bed etc

I wouldnt waste money on a moses basket they are tiny.

I did use the phil & teds cocoon for naps in pram or at nanas house till they were about 7months. squished in, lol. they are around $40 or so on trademe.

We had a hammock for DS, but he hated it. He never slept more than 15 minutes in it.
We were given a family bassinet And he slept in that until he was about 4 months old, then went into a touchwood cot.

We had a regular bassinet which baby slept in at night, and a moses basket for the day. She later moved into her cot. I like the smaller space for them when they are NB's as they are so itty.
