     Topic: 20 Hours ECE     Posted: 18 May 2011 at 9:00pm |

Ok, I'm new to all this and totally confused!

On the Minsitry of Education website it says:
"ECE services can’t charge fees for the hours of 20 Hours ECE"

So, when I look up daycare fees for 6 hours a day, 2 days a week, they are all charging?

eg. Summerfield on Rosedale Rd session 9am-3pm = $60 per day

Can someone explain to me how/why this is allowed?

20 hours Free ECE is only for 3 and 4 year olds. Preschools can decide for themselves whether or not they do the 20 hours free, so some will but many won't. Then they are allowed to charge extra for special services (like providing meals).

Hope this clarifies it a bit

   Hi Ella,

Sorry, I should have clarified - I was looking specifically at 3+ year olds and Summerfield does take part in the ECE scheme so how come they can still charge $60? I realise that centres can have an 'optional charge' but this was their 'standard non-negotiable' charge. It wasn't optional.

I'm pretty sure they can't do that. I'd question them about it! Is it definitely a set charge or is there some fine print saying actually it's optional?

I'm pretty sure its because the 20 hours 'free' ece only covers up to a certain amount per hour.

Although that seems abit steep...$60 for 6 hours after the subsidy.

Some centres just haven't signed up with the 20 free hours thing..

 Look at other daycares..

My boys one he's enrolled from 9-4 3x a week. So we get 6 completely free hours for those 3 days and I pay for 1hr per day

My understanding was the 20 ECE wasn't free but subsidied (sp). At our daycare once they turn 3 the rate is a bit cheaper.
I pay $31 for 6.5 hrs and thats at a daycare in Albany/.Mairangi Bay.  I think that appears to be fairly standard for that area- $60 for only 6 hr seems an awful lot.
